What's the Etiquette on Following Up on a Job Application?

I submitted my job application in the 2nd week of January (their deadline), and I’m still waiting to hear back from my top choice-they mentioned taking a while to review the applications they get. I’m interviewing at the moment and was wondering, in case I’m given an offer elsewhere, if it’s appropriate to follow up on my top choice and ask them about the status of my application.

I've never been a fan of following up. Seems pushy. Unless I had an interview and it went so well that it was basically a guarantee and I haven't heard back, I usually leave it. Especially with it just being an application.

If you do decide to follow up, make it a phone call..no e-mail. Just say that you wanted to assure that they received your application and you are excited about the opportunity. Keep us updated.

    DONE!!!!

Used Becker online. Who needs a text when you can burn your eyes out staring at the screen for months on end?

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you're hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

What's the worst that could happen? If they like your resume they're not going to change their minds because you followed up. But I disagree with calling. Send an email-short and to the point. I applied to this position and wondered where you are in the interview process.

I will tell you that 3 weeks is fairly normal. I applied to my current job on 12/4, had a first interview on 12/18, a second interview on 1/13 and started on 1/26.
