What's after the world of public tax accounting?

    Hi everyone!

I’m currently working as a tax accountant at a midsize firm. I was wondering what tax people did after leaving public accounting. It seems that if I was in auditing, there are a lot of opportunities because of the wide level of exposure they get but are there any for those with a tax background?

wondering the same. I heard it's either corporate tax, more cpa firms/open your own, or maybe teaching..

It's tough to get out of tax once you're in it. I've attended some recruiting seminars and Oil & Gas society meetings, etc and basically we are looked down upon. They don't understand how much really goes into our work and how analytical it is. We're either too stubborn to change our ways or just not smart.

I'm trying my hardest to get out. I changed my resume completely taking out tax titles and making it sound more like I'm a financial analyst. Within the past 2 weeks I received 6 callbacks for interviews with O&G companies. I would never complain about making more money while working less and receiving better benefits. I never understood the fascination with public accounting.

Just this week, I accepted a position in corporate accounting, with my prior accounting experience being in tax. However, I am still fairly early in my career, so changing is easier. I have a years' experience in tax accounting and took a position as an accounts receivable/billing clerk with an international company. Not a high-class prestigious position, but if I adjust the wages to the national average (wages are very low in my region), it pays about $23/hr, full-time with 2 or 3 days of OT per month, so $46k+OT. If you are able to make it in a more entry-level, lower-wage position, the transition is possible.

I only know my experience, though, so not sure what the potential for change is for more established accountants.

I know a guy that was in tax and now works at a casino chain in vegas as an accountant. i think he does normal accounting things, and then works on taxes during tax season for the casino.

I'm not against staying in public my whole life. I was just curious as to what else was out there.

In the same position sort of right now. I have been in corporate tax for about 2.5 years and I really just don't like tax. I started applying about a month and half ago to financial analyst positions in the area but I have yet to get a call back. I am now doing what ‘vartex' did and have change my resume to try and show what else I did besides tax returns to appeal to a financial analyst position. I hope to get an interview soon because so far this has been very discouraging.
