I work as the controller for a small oil and gas company. I’ve been with the company for 4 years. I started as an entry level accountant and worked my way up. I’ve been controller since February. I had 3 employees and now 2. My company is in obvious financial trouble, but it doesn’t seem like the owner is willing to fix it. The General Manager is leaving and I think some of the other managers are too.
The last thing I wanted to do is change jobs. I don’t work more than 40 hours a week and have relatively low stress. Plus I know trying to learn a new job while studying would be extra stressful.
Between the financial situation and managers jumping ship, I think it’s time to look for a new job. This could also solve my issue regarding the supervision /work experience requirement in Texas. My company is willing to engage a cpa to act as a supervisor but im concerned the company won’t last that long. They have also been paying for all my CPA exam expenses, but a lot of that was the general manager’s doing. I would probably have to pay them back for those expenses.
I want to stay in the industry. I’m thinking maybe a staff /senior accountant or assistant controller.
What would you do?
