Realistically with my gpa fall recruiting for public accounting will not be impossible but a real challenge. I would definitely have an easier time with spring recruiting and it looks like starting my career as a staff accountant is a real possibility. I don’t want to jump the gun here, I am mostly asking to relieve some anxiety and get a more knowledgeable picture. But as far as career advancement, where can someone go after staff accountant if they have their cpa? what kind of career advancement can a person make? Will it just be jumping from one staff accountant position to a better staff accountant position? Is eventually becoming a controller something that is not unrealistic for a person that starts their career as a staff accountant, or will there be too many people with public accounting experience applying for those jobs for a person without public experience to get those kind of jobs. CPA, CMA, CFP on your resume and a staff accountant. You could improve and be the hardest worker in the world, but that isn’t something that shows up on paper, which your resume is the first thing companies see.

So what do you do after staff accountant since it's boring? Is everyone saying to just move up? Can people list positions you can do after doing staff accounting work? What other work is more interesting? I'm also tired of doing monthly JE's and reconciling to no end.

One of our staff accountants decided to go into fraud accounting. She learned that the thing she loved the most was figuring out when the sales centers were stealing money, which she leaned to recognize when doing bank reconciliations, or stealing inventory, which she learned when working closely with the inventory control department. She is a stickler for proper paperwork, backup, and authorizations and comes down heavy on the sales centers that don't follow procedure. You just need to figure out what drives you everyday. Monthly JEs and reconciliations can be very boring. I think most long term staff accountants get through the monotony of month end by focusing on the other aspects of their jobs throughout the month. Those are the areas where you can really do different things depending on the size of your company and how heavily staffed they are. A company that is more lean with their staff allows for work in a lot of different areas because they don't have huge departments with 20 people in each department. There is usually less boundaries between departments and more room to help in other areas than just those that are assigned to you.
