With a master’s degree and 5+ years of experience as a CPA, what part-time jobs could I do while working from home? And how much could I make? I was thinking about doing bookkeeping for $18/hr, but I think a master’s + CPA would make me too overqualified for that. I’d like to work about 25 hours/week and I’m primarily interested in the Houston area. Any ideas?

If you're interested in online options, too, I would suggest you check out flexjobs.com – it's subscription-based, but you can look around online and find coupons to get the first month for $5, and you can browse listings to get an idea what they have for free. When I was looking around it, I saw several options for part-time experienced accounting work, but didn't have the experience to qualify myself. There was a range of options, from consulting part-time and contract work to teaching and/or grading online classes.

If you enjoy teaching at all, then tutor. It's a great side gig. I've used tutor.com and wyzant.com and gotten plenty of work through those sites. Though I really don't do more than like five hours a week or so, plenty of people do much more. A lot of accounting/econ students and CPA test takers have contacted me before on there.

Only thing I can think of is bookkeeping and tax. cant do audit.. you can contract your work for staff positions like on roberthalf but there's no guarantee it'll be remote. you can try to find a part-time job being a full keep bookkeeper for a small business that requires you to do no more than 20-30 hours and also lets you work remotely.

I have 5 1/2 years public accounting experience, finishing up education units to become eligible to sit for the CPA exam, live in a smaller town than Houston, and charge $65/hour. With your experience, I'd be shooting for at least $100/hour.

Remember, you probably think at a higher level and have way more experience than just a part time bookkeeper.

Yes, I have seen bookkeepers whom are better accountants than CPA and vice versa. Just do the profession, and yourself, justice. Meet with CPA offices about helping out with overbooked bookkeeping staff. They need help right now. Stay off Craigslist for better quality clients.

Ok, I'm with anyone who said $18 an hour is low. No CPA would bid that low. I'm in public and my billable rate for bookkeeping and compilation services is between $69 and $100 (and I'm not a cpa yet). My firm hires CPA's as independent contractors for things like audit staff, CFO services for our clients, and bookkeeping services and we pay those rates to them. Or, our firm recommends CPA's to clients and clients pay about too. Less for things like payroll and basic bookkeeping, more for controller and CFO services. I've seen a bid for controller services and making financial statements – a job that could be done remotely about 30 hours a month and the guy bid it for $3500 a month. The key here? Experience! You could always do tax returns on the side, of course, but every business needs someone to do the books. And a lot of smaller CPA firms need reliable people to recommend to clients. And I disagree that you can't do audit from home. Sure you can't take an inventory, but preparing work papers and schedules? You can do that.

If you're looking for part-time/work-from-home work, you're not going to be getting full billable rate. Billable rate is supposed to cover overhead etc. at the office as well as compensate the accountant, and is also considered a premium service when you're hiring a CPA to do your basic bookkeeping. However, a work-from-home job isn't expected to pay as much and is going to pay bookkeeper wages for bookkeeping, not CPA wages for bookkeeping. If I was looking for a work-from-home thing, I'd be happy to find something that pays $18/hour. There may be better, but that's not all bad. (I did see one posting for a remote full-charge bookkeeper that paid $26/hour, so it is worth looking around for a bit.)

However, if you can get a consultant type gig, you could potentially make much more while working from home. The job (bookkeeper vs consultant vs part-time Controller vs interim CFO) would make more difference in the pay than the qualifications of the candidate.

Never undersell, always oversell yourself. Most people are going to try to negotiate you down anyway, if you ask very little don't be surprised when you get crumbs. They can pay foreign people as little as $12 an hour with no experience besides bookkeeping, or they can go with someone with 5 years experience and a CPA license. You'll get things done much quicker, you'll be more trusted since you are based in America, and your license itself is like insurance for them. I'd be charging $30 MINIMUM, and honestly if they're a place doesn't need you to work except 10 hrs or less a week, you need to up your billing rate. Lets say they only want you 10 hours a week, even at $40 per hour, $400 a week is chump change for someone to not jack up your books because it will cost a lot more to get someone to fix them, and that right there can be your selling point. You aren't some payroll clerk or person fresh out of high school, it's a small price to pay for such an important piece of their business they probably don't even understand.

You can work from home with Turbo Tax as an Tax advisor during tax season. They pay around $25 an hour but have decent bonuses at end of the season if your performance was good.
