What is meant by accounting experience?

I have completed all 4 parts. But no experience in accounting.

When I am searching for jobs online, or even interviewing, I hate to say, that I need to fulfill my CPA requirements. Usually this is BIG turn down for me. because they think, I just randomly applied at jobs, w/o reading job description.

How do I tell my job description, that it the job will qualify.

I am interested in Consulting type services, like financial advisory services. Would this qualify for to meet CPA requirements? or do I need to search for Staff Accountant, or specifically accounting related.

Depends on the state you're trying to get licensed in. Almost always has to be signed off by a licensed CPA, and sometimes it has to specifically be attest hours.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Prior to applying for a license, an individual must have been employed in academia, a firm, government, or industry in any capacity involving the substantial use of accounting, financial, tax, or other skills that are relevant, as determined by the BOA, to providing services to the public using the CPA title or to an employer using the CPA title for a period that is the full-time equivalent of one year. Whether other skills are relevant shall be determined by the BOA on a case-by-case basis. Self-employment does not meet the definition of experience in accordance with § 54.1-4400

Do Consulting qualify at Big 4?

    thanks mla1169

If you're employed by one of the big 4 to consult it sounds like it would count. But if you have no accounting experience it's unlikely a big 4 would put you in a consulting role.

mla1169,…I have family cousin at Big 4 who will forward my resume at HR. I do have professional experience not related to accounting, but I can relate to financials sales something. but I don't know, if I get consulting. but anyways, I am not too picky about job, whatever I can get, I will take. My first choice is consulting, financial analyst, staff acct, etc..

Kind of the golden rule with any specific questions special to a certain situation… contact your state board.

Additionally, sounds like you missed out on the internship route into public. However, the fact that you have already passed the CPA exam and can put that on your resume should be able to get you a job in public pretty easily. Get in touch with your old university grapevine and found out who's desperate for bodies and get in contact with your local recruiter. Shouldn't be that hard really.

hey, dedigans…I don't like interns personally my opinion…but I was studying FT CPA exams.

My thoughts are similar yours, that I should have problem getting in. But I didn't wanted to ask for consulting, if it didn't meet cpa requirement, plus it would make me look like a dummy, by not knowing what qualifies and what not.

In the accounting industry, I'm pretty sure what most refer to as “Consulting” we refer to as “Agreed-Upon Procedures”.

In other words, with our type of expertise, we would perform certain limited procedures to generate a report of our findings.

If that is the type of work you want to get involved in, most public accounting firms I would think perform this type of work. And depending on your skills, you will be exposed to more and more “consulting” type of engagements.

If you've passed all four parts, include that on your resume. I'm guessing you've finished your education requirement and all you need is the working experience. Shouldn't be too hard in my opinion, maybe you should start sending your resume to places that have more jobs available, i.e. larger cities, etc.

It does vary by state.. in NC you can have general accounting experience NOT under the supervision of a CPA (or signed off on by one), but you need four years instead of one. Obviously not the best route for someone with no experience, but there does seem to be a pretty big difference depending on the state you are applying for a license in.

You don't like interns? What's so bad about knowing you have a full-time job offer upon completion of college for an internship where as long as you come in with a good attitude you get it? Oh, and it's the only time you get OT pay.

dedigans, interns are those who never had any work experience whatsoever & sometmes they don't get much respect as an employee. this is why I studied for FT, knowing, it will make me stronger candidate.

thanks brickell cpa, just increased my level of hope.
