What industry is best to exit out of public?

    I have tried to look around on Google but havent been able to find anything definite.

    Is any particular industry better or worse to leave public and go private? In terms of pay, level of responsibility, hours, etc for the typical exit (2-4 years of public, with a CPA license)?

    Alternatively, if you can have a say in your engagements, is it better to ask all in one industry or to get experience in a broad range of industries?

    Okay, maybe someone has an opinion if my question is a bit less vague. My end goal is to be a controller at a college, or a finance director for a school/school board (or something similar).

    How long should I stay in public (non Big 4, large regional firm), and what sort of position/job title should I look for at that point?

    @OP

    If your idea is to only work for College or K-12 school, then perhaps working on engagements for those clients seems like the right idea. Generally speaking, a college would pay less than industry but perhaps have a better work/life balance.

    I'll let those with better advice and/or big exp. to critique my feedback. :).

    You may want to consider stripping at high end clubs. You can meet high net worth clients. You will have to strip at nights and then do taxes during the day. You can throw in assurance services like…”I assure you that I won't tell your spouse.” I'm just thinking outside the box here :0).

    Lol, don't know what is going on in here, but thanks for the information.

    I actually found looking through LinkedIn a much better way to see the different routes and titles that people have had to get to Controller/Assistant Controller/Director of Finance positions.

    Does anybody have an idea of what the salary range (in the SF Bay Area, Seattle, or Austin) is for a Controller at a Community College/State/University school is? I'd guess looking at the profiles of people that it would be 130k+ since it seemed most have had 7-10 years of experience before getting to that level.
