Specifically big 4? What if I just say no I don’t want to work over time and leave at 5 every day? Will they fire you on the spot? Is it even legal that they force you to work hours you aren’t paid?

If one is too lazy for any OT, there's no possible ladder for them to climb in the corporate world. Managers/supervisors notice which employees are gone at the strike of 5, and what employees are gone when their work is done.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

You'd be shown the door very quickly, not to mention every one of your co-workers would DESPISE you, even the ones you've never even met. The pay is terrible for the hours you work, but you also know what you're signing on for when you take the job.

Try academia. I work 8-4:30.. Not paid for OT but the job gets done even if I have to stay late because I care about my faculty and staff. It is rare though. Year end lasts about 8 weeks and it is a killer! Big4 was never my dream or plan.

The last firm I worked at I didn't have much work to do one week so I called in for personal reasons on one of the mandatory Saturdays. I was consistently working as much as everyone else. It turns out one of the managers wrote it up as a performance issue.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I think OT depends on the size of the firm and the location. I have been working in public for 3 years and I have not really had to work overtime. There were a few occasions, when we were getting back late from an audit. So maybe a 1/2 at most. The partners do work OT during tax season. During my reviews they always ask if I am available for OT, which I always say yes. I think this may be the first year I will have to work OT during tax season, but they told me the most would be 8 hours a week, which I could do on a Saturday. One of our partners retired in June, so there is more of a workload for everyone. As far as salary, I make $38,500 and I have a MSA and 3/4 of the CPA done. It doesn't seem like a lot to those on this forum, but I live in a very small city. I make more than most of my friends, and I am on track to make partner in 5-10 years.

    REG - 64, 72, 81!
    FAR - 77
    AUD - 79
    BEC - 72, 79! And Done!

other than govt work, it will always look bad if you work a hard 8-5. I work in industry doing tax. My director has about 2 days off total in Jan (counting sat/sun) and its crazy again in july-sept. Even during non busy times i usually work 730-6. welcome to life…..8hr hard days are really only a thing in govt.

    Aud-75 3x I knew i never liked you
Bec-77 1x being in the bubble is stressful
Reg-82 4x its not me its you...and no we cant be friends
    Far-78 1x easiest section
