Specifically big 4? What if I just say no I don’t want to work over time and leave at 5 every day? Will they fire you on the spot? Is it even legal that they force you to work hours you aren’t paid?

Well I am already so deep into the accounting thing I can't get out of it. If I had known there was travel and overtime I probably would have picked a different degree but by the time I figured that out I was halfway done with my master. Although people complain about the money online I don't understand that because based on what I see on craigslist managers are making like 75-115k a year. I also see people with even associates degree making like 32k so I don't get how people on this forum make like 30k and have masters and CPA passed.

If you refuse overtime, you will be granted your wish. In fact, you will be rewarded handsomely. The firm will let you go. Therefore, not only will you not have to work overtime. You will not be working regular time either.

    AUD: 94 (Nov. 2013)
    FAR: 76 (Oct. 2013)
    BEC: 79 (Nov. 2012)
REG: 84 (Dec. 2013) It's Mile 26.2, and we finished. Blood, sweat and tears, passion, perseverance, and never giving up, we did it!

Here in South Florida, you make about 55K to 70K as a Senior Accountant (5Years of experience) in a mid-size private company. The same senior level position, but with a CPA license can make from 65K to 80K,so about 10K more per average. Who makes 30K here after becoming a CPA?

Everything isn't so black and white meaning just because you have all these credentials means you're making top dollar as a manager. It's about experience, opportunity, location, demand etc..

You sound like a perfect gov/city employee. Work steady hours and hardly ever overtime depending on what department and position. Example, my friend works as an accountant for a municipality and there is no budget for him to work OT, so he works strictly 8 hours a day.

You should think about government work. The IRS, city government, state government, the Fed. I even know someone who is a civilian accountant for the military. A few of the people I know got furloughed when the government shut down, but the hours and benefits are pretty good. I think the salary tends to be a little lower, but not shockingly low.

    REG - 94
    BEC - 92
    FAR - 92
    AUD - 99

If you can't handle working OT then don't waste your time or an employers time trying to hack it in public.

Nothing personal to the OP and I'm not one to be harsh or unkind around here but I can't stand it when people whine about OT in public. Everyone knows that public isn't a 40 hour per week gig and I pinky-promise that you won't die or turn into a pumpkin if you work 15 minutes past 5pm. If you want a job in public, you'd better be prepared work your tail off.

No OT in a small firm? HA!!!!! I work at a small firm and I worked 28 days straight to 4/15 this year and I sat for my successful audit retake on 4/16. Sounds like fun, right? 😉 My non-tax season work week is between 50-60 depending on what's happening. Yes, April busy season is killer but that is what is expected of me…long hours just comes with the territory in my position. I'm the senior on staff that those hours are what it takes to get the job done. I'm also on partner track, so I definitely need to prove that I can hang. I was made fully aware of those hours when I accepted the promotion. I'm not afraid to put the work in. All that being said, I am fortunate that I receive a very large tax season bonus and have a very generous compensation package. I'm fortunate to be paid well for hard work!!!!
