I am starting an accounting internship at a midsize CPA accounting firm in a few weeks and was looking for advice on what excel functions I should know. I have been using excel quite often but only really know the basics.

Any books in particular to read? (got a B&N gift card)

Learn how to utilize pivot tables as well. They can save you a lot of time when needing to massage massive amounts of data into a format that meets your needs.

Knowing how to embed a MATCH statement into an INDEX function can be useful and will impress all your friends. With VLOOKUPs, the column you are looking up from has to be to the left of the data you're returning. With an INDEX and MATCH, that isn't the case.

I would also suggest learning some of the everyday keyboard functions you'll use, so you don't have to your use mouse as much. Much faster.

What have I gotten myself into?

Vlookup, macros, pivot tables, conditional formatting, and… that's it.

I never had a situation where I needed hlookup or index and matching functions. That's more of a cherry on the sundae type of thing.
