I've wondered what it would be like to be an accountant for the NFL.

It would probably be awesome. I have a couple of drinking buddies that the shore that work at NFL films (it's in Marlton, NJ, about an hour from the shore). Not sure what they do, but I do know that they are at every Superbowl (with their wives, too). I try to avoid Facebook for a week or two after the Superbowls to avoid being jealous.

How many letters do you needParticipantTreasury is a great place to be but it can be very difficult to break into. Years ago I decided to get the CTP (treasury certification) in an effort to break in from the Finance side. I got very little action. It's very much an experience rules all type of specialty. I think with a CPA, however, along with a CTP and some accounting and/or Finance experience one could break in. I let my CTP expire because my career trajectory took me far far away from treasury and since it was my only certification at the time it didn't make much sense to keep up with the CPE. Once I finish this beast, though, my plan is to re certify and give it another go. It truly is the best combination of Finance and Accounting to me….

Lari SaMemberYou can get a taste of the professor gig without a PhD, I adjunct at DeVry University. You only need a masters to teach the undergrad courses. Not exactly an accounting school, and not exactly a University, but it gives you a taste to see if it's something you want to persue and invest 5+ years into a PhD for….

CPA50ParticipantGreat question Jay, and such an interesting thread! I am a Certified Fraud Examiner and do forensic accounting and investigations. It's not for the faint of heart and can be very confrontational and emotional. The hardest part is finding the right employees who can stomach the heartache of the clients and still follow the numbers to make a case. I'm part detective, part bartender, listening to woes and problems and trying to get to the heart of the problem. Then I get to tell the story with numbers to folks who generally like stories, but not numbers. If you're at all interested, then start looking into it now. It's a fascinating career with lots of options- Secret Service, FBI, Medicare/govt fraud, local police departments and District Attorneys, large firms, regional firms, attorneys and little sole practitioners like me 🙂

CPA50ParticipantHi Letters,
I believe they do, although I think it's older than for field agents. Check out their website, I'm sure it will tell you. And, yes, I am too old for them – Darnit! Although I do get to hang with them once in awhile and pretend I'm cool 😉

rugger246ParticipantThe FBI has two career tracks for someone who wants to be a forensic accountant: 1.) Special Agent and 2.) Forensic Accountant.
Special Agents are the true law enforcement officers (i.e. badges, guns, etc.) who swear out affidavits, warrants, and other stuff. However, they are prone to having to move and you could be assigned to work other matters beside white collar crime (i.e. terrorism, drugs, espionage, etc.). The max age for entrance is 37 years old.
Forensic Accountants are professional staff with no maximum age requirement. They are looked upon as subject matter experts in the analysis and investigation of financial matters pertaining to investigations the FBI works. This would include White-Collar Crime, Terrorism, Cyber Crimes, and others. Day in and day out you will be reviewing bank records, business records, tax returns, and other financial documents to bring criminal charges against individuals believed to have violated federal crimes.
Just recently the FBI had a posting open for Special Agents, I have heard that some Forensic Accountant jobs may be opening up on http://www.usajobs.gov in the near future.

CTP needs at least one year of work experience in treasury type role, before you can be eligible for taking the exam. Just checked on the website. Is there anyway that the experience can be obtained after the exam.

How many letters do you needParticipantHowdyous: oh wow that's new since I've taken it! It used to be just a degree and I think just general experience. Now I'm kicking myself for giving it up! I'll investigate once I take REG on sat…
Update: I just read on the website it's 2 years of corporate finance experience (does not specify treasury) or 1 year plus graduate degree. I guess since that was my background I didn't really consider it. Those of you with public/Corp accounting background could have trouble. I think public is a stretch but if you have corporate accounting I would still give it a shot and just try to focus the application on as much corporate finance related stuff as you can (so if you touch anything during the budget season, any analysis at all…and of course anything that relates to cash flow)…

Just checked
https://ctpcert.afponline.org/About_the_Exam/Eligibility_Requirements.html
“An advanced business degree from a graduate-level program is equivalent to one year of work experience. In order to qualify for this equivalent experience, a transcript or copy of the graduate degree must be sent to:”
The question I have for you is. Is this certification held in high esteem. What is the passing rate. Would it be a good addition to CPA in the sense, would being a CPA already cover or at least have the impact of being a sort of a Treasury candidate.
Would it seem crazy being a CPA and getting this Cert to apply for a Treasury job where most of the people may not be CPA. What are the benefits in the future being in treasury. You get my drift.
Thanks for pointing out CTP. I did not know it even existed.

CPA50ParticipantHiya Soccer,
I have been a CFE since 2008. Yes, I am getting my CPA because I really want to be a CFF. I hope this gives me extra credibility among other CPAs and attorneys. People in my field love as many letters as you can get after your name :).
Thinking about a Masters in Forensic Accounting after this. Maybe PhD to teach in my twilight years (which are coming up fast!).
