When you’re interviewing for a public accounting job, is it appropriate to discuss your long-term goals even if they don’t involve working for the firm you’re interviewing with? Everyone knows that turnover is high in public accounting, but is that some sort of a taboo subject in public accounting interviews? If your goal is to reach CFO of another company, is that appropriate to talk about in an interview?

Just lie and say you want to become an important person in public accounting. Interviews are all about theatrics, not about truth.

When interviewed with a Big 4, I said I am not sure where I see myself in 5-10+ years, but I do know it will be something with tax ( I am going into tax) – They seemed to like my answer, and that was it.

And NO do not mention your goals are with another company, no one will spend any time or money to train you only to have you move to another company.
