Wanting to get back into Auditing

Hey everyone! So I was an auditor for 2 years and audited a lot of governmental stuff and also audited a large corporation that was private. Our firm ended up closing the doors because the partners couldn’t get along and over 2/3rds the workforce was forced to look for work elsewhere. Some were picked up by a Big 4 firm since they picked up our largest client. I was given an offer but backed out because I felt the offer I had was better both money and opportunity to pass the exam.

Now that I am on the cusp of being done with my exam, I keep wishing I had accepted that big 4 offer because I have found myself missing it, and knowing it would provide great opportunities. It has been about 2 years sense my old firm shut down. Once I am done with the exam, what would be the best way to get back into public or get a shot at big 4?

Currently I am a Sr. Accountant at an international airport. I track over 300 million in revenues and reconcile them to what the billing agreements are. I do the statement of revenues & expenses monthly and the monthly trend analysis as to the changes are compared to the prior year. I also have a significant role in our CAFR in the preparation of that.

Well, off the top of my head, I would imagine getting back into public wouldn't be extremely difficult. However, at what level you'd go back in and at which firm you can get into is where it gets complicated.

I get the feeling that if you're not able to get into Big 4 right away, one to two years as a Senior at a smaller firm first would do the trick.

Are there any ex-coworkers you can contact and ask for advice? They might be able to point you in the right direction. At the very least, they can give you a feeling on your chances of going back to public.

That is the tough part… everyone I know who I worked with and was good friends in school with has left public accounting. I can reach out to some acquaintances hoping they could get me in contact with someone. I have contacted a couple people about getting me in contact with their recruiter even though they left the firm. It is pretty much like being back in school but with a few years under the belt and a CPA credential on top of it when I am done.
