    Hello,

I’m 13.5 months into my first big corporate accounting position (entry level) and lately i’ve been growing very impatient with this whole waiting game. it seems like everyone else is getting promoted. i know the company policy is to stay in one position at least a year but now that I did my time in my current position, I wanna get a promotion and take a different role so bad my blood itches..I’m getting so used to my current role that it is getting boring and losing motivation to excel at what I do.

I recently had an interview with another department but they haven’t got back to me yet.. If I don’t get the job, I might be stuck at my current position for who knows how long.. until another position in my level opens up. I should be thankful that they let me interview for the position and I know that I shouldn’t complain just because things don’t happen my way..I mean there are plenty of candidates with better qualification for the position but it is matter of recognition.

more than raise and making more money, to me, it’s about getting recognized that I am worthy of taking on bigger roles.

I feel like first promotion is very important because it’s like setting a bar/benchmark – if you get promoted after a year, another promotion is expected after another year. similarly, if you get promoted after two years, it will take another two years for managements to even consider you for a promotion..

I’m afraid that not getting promoted on time will have negative effects on my career – my mood, motivation, and pride..

I know I should have faith and keep a good attitude but it’s not easy to focus on my current job with all of this is going on in my head.

what’s your thoughts on getting promoted at work? can you please share your experiences and give me some advice?

"If you can do it, I can do it better."

hey FlipACoin, Thanks for your advice. Yes, I was very careful about the whole politic aspect of it so I asked my boss for his advice and support before going into the process and made sure it is “approved” by him and his boss. I have a lot of respect for my boss – he's smart and technically advanced also when I first entered this corporate scene and I was so ignorant about corporate politics, he coached me and covered me up for my mistakes.I wish him the best and hopefully one day I can work for him again (he's getting a promotion too and leaving his current group). so to comment on your advice, I'm pretty sure I at least did the politics with my boss correctly.

I hate to say this but TBH, I keep comparing myself to my colleagues who got a promotion and moving up faster than me. it hurts my pride to some degree because I feel inferior to them. I give credit to some of them, but I also feel like I can do much better than some.

Besides my skills, attitue, and politics, luck still plays a big part in this because a right position needs to open up at the right time.

I will take your advice and give it at least another six months and give management what they want – put my head down and work until it happens..

CPA..Nice to hear! I only went on about it because so many people just starting out tend to overlook that aspect, glad to see that you went the right way. I completely understand how you feel. Opportunities come at different times for everybody, so try not to let that get you down. Since your boss is moving on the six extra months is perhaps not as big of a deal. Just keep plugging away at different internal opportunities as they arise. I would say that, as painful as it might be, do try to stick around toward the end of your second year before looking for an external opportunity (that is if an internal one doesn't happen sooner). Good luck!
