So this is my two cents. I've worked a tax season at a small company. LOTS of 1040, good number of 1120(s), and a handful of 1041. It's somewhat isolating. You learn on the job. The tax code is SO huge that you have to do research if you're unsure. Sometimes, you go in and out but the only person you're interacting with is yourself for the whole day.
I finished an audit internship where I literally did a first year's work. I got to interact with my team a lot. There were several free meals as well. Especially as an intern, they train you ON the job so you're more close with them. Even though, I didn't get an offer (they didn't have space, it's a regional firm), I'm still in contact with the one of the managers I worked with, in case for references and future opportunities. You get to speak with someone new everyday and it doesn't get boring as quickly.
As you can, I'm FOR audit. I actually turned down 2 permanent tax offers for this. So yeah, depends on how you are, tax is very individual and audit is very cooperative.
