What is the best way to transition to an internal audit role if the only experience I have is 1.5 years as an auditor in Big 4 and a couple years as an Accountant in industry. Do I need to go back to school and finish up a Computer Information Systems degree or can I just jump into an entry level internal audit role? Most of the jobs I see online specify a Bachelors in Computer Science/Information Systems. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice!

You can get an internal audit position without CIS degree.
Check out the CIA – certified in internal audit designation
Also look into joining the IIA, institute of internal auditors
Search around on their site, it might put you in the right direction

With Big 4 experience it should be easy to transition to internal audit. You don't need to go back to school and if you have the CPA or studying for the CPA make sure you have that on your resume.

Thanks for the info! Glad to hear I won't need to go back to school. I guess my best bet is to start working on the CIA and apply for entry level internal audit jobs. I started off good with the CPA exam (90 on Audit) but never finished so I will just focus on the CIA for now. Hopefully I won't have a hard time finding a job to fulfill the 2 year work requirement.

In my previous job, we hired a girl with an ECON MAJOR! but she was CPA and CIA. I think she only did about a year in public. You should be ok. If they like you , they will train you but definitely the CIA/CPA combo will help

I never had an audit job in my life and now work as an internal auditor. But I had passed one part of the cpa exam and told them I would pass a second one a few days later.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far!

I have been doing more research the last couple of days and noticed that most of the internal audit jobs require at least 25% travel with many requiring 50% or more. I don't mind traveling but would like to keep it to a minimum. Are their certain industries/companies where the internal auditors tend to travel less? Also, will it be difficult for me to find an internal audit job with low travel? I am willing to relocate.

It just depends on the company. I have found that sometimes they will put down the percentage of travel but when you talk to them you find that you dont travel much. 25-30% of pretty much the low end standard they will post. However, you can find jobs with no travel. My very first job I traveled 60% of the time but I loved it because I was single. And now I am back in industry in IA and I have no travel at all. Which is great since we are expecting our first baby.

    Oh how exciting! Congrats! 🙂

That's awesome that you don't have to travel at all! Do you work for a large or small company? And are you all hiring lol?
