Has anyone out there working in public accounting ever requested to transfer offices? I’m planning to move after busy season ends and the public accounting firm where I work has an office in the city in which I’m moving. Has anyone out there ever transferred to a different office? I was not sure how to go out about it – who should I approach first – the office managing partner, or my assigned coach, or HR? Hoe far in advance should I tell them? Do I have to wait until there’s an opening for my position in the other office or do they usually let current employees transfer if they’re moving?

I contacted my HR rep when I was considering transferring offices. Once you do that though, I would talk with your coach because HR will likely reach out to people who have managed you or who you are connected with I should say. I made the mistake of reaching out to HR and not letting my managing partner know I was considering a transfer, who helped me get the job in the first place, and he found out and asked me about it. So I think it is always smart if you speak with people around you about your decision. You may even want to speak with them first to just let them know and give them the chance to hear you out as I am sure they will be sad to see you go and will want you to stay. After that HR takes over and guides you through the process. I was required to interview with the office I wanted to transfer to, but it was very informal and was not like an interview at all. If you have worked with the firm for awhile they shouldn't have any issues transferring you. Also, I am sure the office you want to transfer to will need your help anyway so I wouldn't worry about a position not being open. Just reach out to HR and they will explain everything in detail and be able to answer your questions. I would give it at least a few months in advance if not longer than that as the transfer process can be time consuming based on all the info and steps you will have to go through and just communication time between offices. It is never too early to let HR know. Good luck!

    AUD - 69, 77
    REG - 74, 81

    IL candidate!

    Finally done (5/24/16)!! Yahooooooo!
