Time between interview and offer

What is the typical time you should expect to hear back on an offer? I interviewed with one of the big 4 on Wednesday and I thought I would hear back by the end of today.

What a nightmare of a day it was too… the interviews went good, but the day was horrible. I ended up missing my flight to the city I was interviewing in. Luckily I am about 6 hours away from the city I was interviewing in. So I called them up and asked if it would be possible to push the interviews back two hours and I would drive there. They pushed the interviews back and had a ton of laughs at my expense when I got there (which was expected). I am hoping they see my willingness to jump in the car and drive 6 hours as a positive and that I really want the position. But FML… really I missed my flight. I can’t help but think it is going to automatically close the door.

I officially heard back the day of on one and the next day on another. That said, I've heard about people on here not hearing back for a week and receiving good news. So, enjoy your weekend. Maybe they have another round on Monday and want to decide from the entire population 😀

I received an offer the same day for three of the Big 4 and the next day (technically Monday after a Friday interview) for the fourth one. My decision was down to one of the first three and the one I heard back about on that Monday. How soon I heard back after my interview was actually one of my big deciding factors in choosing that firm in the first group.

I recently interviewed at a big 4 for a full time position, but took the very first interview date offered. The interview was on the 4th and I was told they won't make final decisions until near the end of the month. Ugh what a wait its been and its only been a week or so! Luckily I have a friend on the inside keeping me up to date on my competition and what's happening.

Wow, how did you guys got the offer so quick? @UCMCPA & @barelystayingsane

Would you mind sharing some tips. I mean, putting aside GPA (I'm sure you guys had stellar GPA's), did you join clubs or anything that would've made your name known with the recruiters?

to @Never_Give_Up1 wishing you all the best! I hope you get it 🙂

I'm not exactly sure what I did to get offers so quickly. I will say that every one of my interviews was just having a conversation…none of that “Tell me about a time…” stuff. Maybe the fact that I could carry on a conversation was a positive. For the firm that I eventually chose, I demonstrated to the partner how I synthesized the performance of an indexed annuity using call and put options and measured that performance over 20 years to the performance of the S&P 500. The recruiter came up to me before I even left the office and asked me which office I wanted to be in. The partner called me about a half hour later with a verbal offer as I was driving home. I also represented the U.S. in an international case competition, so I was able to talk about those experiences during my interview, which the interviewers definitely got excited about.

I would definitely recommend doing the case competitions that the Big 4 sponsor, since those are GREAT ways to meet the members of the firm. If you can take examples of your work from previous internships (or even applicable classes) and actually pull those out during the interview, it can be very helpful and show how prepared you are.

@barelystayingsane, did you agree on the offer over the phone? I know you had a few, but assuming it was the firm that you wanted to join, how would you have responded? How long do the firm usually give you to accept the offer?

    thanks 🙂

I would not recommend accepting a job on the phone, because you don't get the actual details of your offer until a few days later when they email it to you. I always said something along the lines of “Thank you very much for the offer! I am very interested in working for your firm, and I'm looking forward to reviewing the details of the offer” or something like that. If you're interested, definitely show that you're interested and excited, but do not commit. You could even say “I don't want to commit at this time” if you wanted to. Nobody would/should expect you to accept the verbal offer. If they're trying to pressure you into accepting, that throws up a red flag.

The initial time you are given is usually around 10 days. However, you can request a reasonable extension of this time, especially if it's the first firm you interviewed with. The recruiters should want you to make an informed decision and choose what you feel is right for you. If they give you a hard time about the extension (and don't really provide a reason why), that should also raise a red flag. All of the recruiters I talked to told me it was standard practice to allow a reasonable extension.
