I’m starting my career in public accounting very soon and was wondering if people with experience could share with me some important things to know before I start. I want to hit the ground running and try to not be lost. Also I would like to know if there is anything I can do to prepare myself for the profession!!

    Thanks

    1. Get CPA Exam Done: CHECK

    2. Prepare yourself to be lost, frustrated, and generally feeling kinda dumb. These feelings will pass, and come back, and pass again, and come back, and so on–its all a part of the steep learning curve that is public accounting.

So, be prepared to for that, don't be afraid to ask questions, but a nice tip is to get a few questions going before stopping your supervisor to ask a question. So if you get stuck in one area but can make progress elsewhere, jot down a note, move on if its possible and hit them up once you have a few. Also, try figuring things out before asking questions, it helps you learn. There is a tricky line between spinning your wheels and wasting lots of time and putting in little effort and using your Senior as a crutch–try to avoid both extremes lol

Always have a positive attitude, even if you think you have been assigned the most mundane task. Not sure how big the firm is, but this will definitely happen starting out. Just approach everything as a learning opportunity. Do not be afraid to ask questions and get to know your team members. It is very important to build a relationship with your team members since you will be spending many hours in the same room/table with them! Good luck!

    BEC: 73, 81
    AUD: 85
    FAR: 71, 77
    REG: 74, 75...finally DONE! 😀

*This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently 🙂
