Wondering if someone will share their experience on what they did after experience in an accounting firm and their CPA license. Did you go into nonprofit, banking, government? How did that turn out for you? What is the next step up and what is your career goal?

I got out of public accounting so I could pass the exam. With the hours I was working I just didn't have the time to do it. I jumped into government and to be honest, it has been the most frustrating thing I have experienced in my career. People just don't care in government, a lot are here just for a paycheck. People are extremely incompetent, and when I point things out that we can change to make the process more efficient to save us time and money, people get offended that you either want to change things or point out that there is better way to do things. This is mainly due to people being in the position you are in and they never were able to point things out, or it over laps what they are doing making them look bad. I have probably saved the place I work close to 100-150 work hours and all I have gotten from the people I work with is the cold shoulder. The CFO loves me, but my co-workers hate me.

Once I am done with the exam, I plan on leaving. Either getting back into public or trying to find something else higher up on the totem pole somewhere else.

I'm in NFP, my experience and others support Never Give Up1 regarding Govt accounting. I would say in NFP people care more and are more competent than Govt but are not as competitive as other industries (I assume).

The pay in NFP is much lower and you may have difficulty getting out once you're in (though I don't have firm experience).

Work life balance is usually better in NFP.
