I have been finding out how difficult it is to find work in the current job market for CPA candidates, especially with regards to software. I have seen job postings citing software and programming languages that I have either never used, or even never heard of, but are of particular interest to employers (examples include: Peoplesoft, SQL, SAP ERP, etc). From your experiences, what software is most beneficial to a CPA or CPA candidate?

    *rankings and explanations appreciated πŸ™‚

    Mayo,

That's good to know! And yes, I agree, ACL is kind of hard to figure out (the functions) but it's very helpful! Unfortunately, we don't use it at BOE. I have to analyze and sort through half a million of rows in Excel!!! Mostly using the sorting/filtering functions….but it's hard to make it easier when there are so many product names I have to verify and make sure they are CEDs…..

It's complicated πŸ™‚ I am not just summarizing… I have to do bunch of other stuff with that data…. but trust me, I'm trying to do whatever I can to make the process go faster…. being able to work from home this week helped a lot! Contrary to common belief… lol

    Hello all,

I dug out this old post because I have an interview with a company looking for experience with “Oracle Financial Applications.”

I tried looking around online to find a demo, but all I could find were flow charts.

I figured I'd check here to see if anyone has any experience and/or insight to the applications.

If anyone knows where I can read a training manual or watch videos, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance!

I've used primarily Oracle & SAP, but generally speaking most of the large ERP systems are very similar. If you have never used an ERP system it's hard to explain how it looks and I'm not going to lie it will count against you. Your best bet is to redirect the interview to other systems you have used, even if they are planning/data retrieval based (Hyperion, Cognos). It's fine to emphasize Excel and Access as well but just be sure that they know that you know that they are very very different beasts. I would do some research on what ERP systems are, know them in theory at least and that could help. Good luck!

At my current job we use Great Plains, actually they call it Dynamics GP now… When I started they wanted someone with experience using GP (per the ad) so I did some research online and told them that I researched it and it is a Microsoft product and per my research is easy to navigate and pick up if you've use Microsoft programs like Excel, which I have extensively in addition to QuickBooks and a few others. I actually took a Database Design class in college and we had an SAP computer lab class that I also took. It was hard for me to make the connection between what we were doing and real life application. Oh and I graduated almost 10 years ago! I can't believe more colleges are at least trying to give their students some experience with ERP's…

One doesn't just learn an ERP. Particularly if they are asking about Oracle, Oracle is a framework that can be built to suit any industry, often requiring onsite programmers to deal with changes and updates. If you are decent with software than just emphasize the point that you learn quickly and shouldn't have a problem.
