I'd wait a day. There's no real rule but the day of does seem desperate to me. I know it's tempting as I went through the same thing. I wrote it as soon as I got home so I could remember what we talked about but waited a day to send it.

My practice has always been the day of.

But maybe that because I've always scheduled morning interviews?

For instance, interview at 9am, send thank you around 3pm. But I guess if the interview ended in the afternoon, I would have waited until the next morning.

It's always worked for me… And I also had a recruiter once who always wanted me to send an email RIGHT AFTER the interview. She would actually call me… It was pretty annoying, but she definitely knew what she was doing…

I wrote one to an interviewer right after my interview 2 weeks ago … I still haven't heard from them !

lol … they should reply with a no at least … right ?

or do they not respond for on campus interviews ?

Most firms respond with a no, but I've had a few not respond (it's been about 4 weeks now). Big 4 respond with a no from what I've seen.

I was once rejected from a job right after I submitted the application. How weird is that?

I sent an thank you to both people I interviewed with 2 hours after the interview on just this Wednesday. Then Thursday they made an offer for me without interviewing other people since they told me that I was the first they interviewed.

The general rule is within 24 hours. Since people that I both interviewed with knew that I was not employed so I guess it wouldn't hurt to sent it out immediately.

I send it as soon as I get back from the interview. I don't particularly think it seems “desperate” especially since I have a full time job and don't have to find another one. I am that punctual in my job, I respond to emails almost immediately and treat the interview process with the same timely attention as I treat everything else in my life. If the interviewer reads into it any other way, we wouldn't work well together in the first place and its just as well.

Don't send an email- send a thank you card. During all my recruiting events, everyone has always said that emails seem quick, impersonal, and you don't have to spend much time on them. Cards seem much more personal because you it's a handwritten note and people know you took the time to put thought into it. That being said, send it the day of your interview. Lots of companies make decisions within a day, so the sooner the better.

mustpass I am curious…I know that used to be the common rule (handwritten was preferrable) but I thought that had changed. Has there been anything pretty recently that backs that up (not by you personally necessarily)

Just worried because a handwritten note is absolutely not an option for me and that worries me.

@mla- every person who came to my recruiting events in college said this (all big 4 firms and larger regional ones) said this- I graduated in may so they were all recent. All of them specifically said to not send emails but to send thank you cards because they will actually be noticed. Especially since people get so many emails a day, it's just another one they have to open, read, and delete. I sent a thank you card to every person I interviewed with and I was one of 10-13 people applying for a summer internship, and I was the only one who got a job offer. I doubt that was why but it certainly helped.

I would send both . A non formal email, if you have their email address and also a thank you letter. A lot of times people don't check their mail too frequently.

I was hoping 88 was the year you graduated and that advice was outdated lol. Thanks for the response and the firsthand info.

I say there's no rule; I've always sent a thank-you email highlighting what we talked about during the interview sessions and to emphasize my interests in the company as well as how well I'd fit in.

It's just like dating — if you meet a nice girl and you feel like calling/texting her as soon as you leave drunk from the club, go for it. There's no wait 2 days or whatever rule. I think if you feel like calling her, just man up and give her a call.
