Temp wanting to be Perm.

Hey, guys! I haven’t been very active here lately since moving out of states, getting a new job, etc., but you have been very helpful while I was studying for CPA.

Little background: I passed CPA last November. But with no accounting experience, no accounting degree (BS in Business with additional Accounting courses to meet CPA requirement) with a huge gap in employment, my job application was going nowhere. I finally got an offer for a temp admin assistant position in a mid-size public accounting firm, and although the pay wasn’t great, I took the job to put the foot in the door. I’ve been working with the firm since January, and my contract will end soon after the tax season is over. So far, my experience in the firm has been great! I’d really love to work here permanently, as an accountant, of course.

The assignment is “temporary” but the hiring manager is aware that I’ve passed CPA, and that I’m interested in a tax accounting position. I’m not really sure how serious she was, but the manager said getting me the perm position after the contract is a good possibility. I’m not really sure if it’s a good indicator, but the manager asked for the score certificates to have it in their system. Also, after the interview, they liked me so much that they raised the pay rate to keep me in the firm, at least that’s what the temp agency said.

I’m feeling quite anxious as the end of the contract is coming close. But I’m not really sure if I should talk to the manager about the permanent position and how I should do it, tactfully.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

From a person who has been temp to perm before, my advice would be to keep what you are doing.

Just don't think about whether they plan on keeping you or not. These agencies tend to say a lot of things our of their @$$e$ so anything can happen. If they decide to keep you, great. If they don't, you've already made plans to move on.

Every temp job I had, I just consider it not lasting a few months. I could care less about all the chatter. I make plans on how on to move forward after the temp job.

A lot of times, it usually works out and even if it didn't at least I took steps to prepare myself.

I agree with Skynet; just keep doing your best. Worst case, you have a busy season at a public accounting firm on your resume and you can leverage that for the next job.
