Technical Interview?

    Hello everyone,

I have an office interview with a large regional firm for an experienced audit staff position. I was notified by HR rep that the interview is a ‘technical’ interview lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Has anyone had any experience with ‘technical’ interviews before? This is my first time so I would appreciate some advice on how to best prepare.

    Thanks!

Hmm, never took one. Out of curiosity, what's your background? Public or industry accounting? Have you indicated you have specific accounting knowledge? Like fund accounting, real estate/construction, banking, etc.?

I'm currently an audit associate with a large local firm with approximately 1.5 years of experience. Prior to that, I worked in a small business for a few years in a business management / financial analyst role. I indicated working on engagements across a range of industries since my current firm is a generalist firm. Also indicated having some in charge experience in small benefit plans, not-for profits, and broker-dealers.

My guess is they will ask about the in charge experience, but what specifically, I am not sure. I don't know if I should focus more on accounting knowledge or audit procedural knowledge, if that makes any sense.

Hmm, if I had to guess (which I'm obviously doing lol), I'd say they'll ask more about audit procedures. I mean, that's usually the hardest type of experience to emulate anywhere else. If you can audit one industry, you can audit another.

Maybe you can contact HR and dig a bit more? Like you can ask if you need to bring any specific materials or if they'd like you to do any preparation in something specific? Their BS questions, but it might get the HR person to start talking and spill some valuable nuggets of info.
