    Hello everyone…

I just took my last exam 11/19…so while I wait for my score I thought I’d get some much needed career advice.

My husband, who majored in CJ in undergrad, took his first intro to accounting class earlier this year…I of course helped him out on concepts he didn’t understand. It felt great! …and he got an A by the way 🙂

So now I feel like I can teach and I actually enjoy the idea of teaching an intro to accounting class. I feel there was so much my professors missed the opportunity to tell me. They could’ve made understanding accounting much easier if they hadn’t depended on the textbook so heavily and actually TAUGHT!

Anyway, is there anyone else out there who is teaching. What are some things I need to know if I’m going to pursue this? I still want to keep my 9-5 and teach part time…is this realistic?

Sounds like a great idea! I totally agree with acamp. My favorite Accounting instructor was not a PhD. She taught the lower level accounting courses and had real world experience. She is probably the reason I decided on Accounting, well there may have been some other factors, but before her classes I was not planning on majoring in Accounting.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

Do any of the universities you attended offer adjunct professor roles? I was contacted by my grad school (it is a fairly small one) to come in and teach the intro to accounting course.

    IL
    FAR (2/20/13): 76
    AUD (4/8/13): 78
    BEC: (5/20/13): 86
    REG: (7/10/13): 76
    Ethics: Done
Operation "Hurry up and pass this thing before we have our first baby in October" COMPLETED

I'm looking into first teaching online…see how that goes, then if I like it I will pursue classroom teaching.

I currently work as an adjunct teaching one online course a semester at an extension campus of the major university where I live. Here is my perspective from what I have seen:

1.) It can be quite rewarding knowing that you are helping to groom the next generation. However, I will say instructing an online class cuts down on the actual face time and interaction you would get in a traditional classroom. Even though, I have never taught face to face…I would consider the time commitment to be more than in the online setting.

2.) Being an accountant I want to be a master of my craft…what better way to do that than actual teach to others what you practice. From that aspect it has helped me be a better accountant in the area I work. At times your students teach you things.

3.) Do not plan on getting paid much. I say that because you are not going to get rich adjuncting…on average a three credit hour course for a full 16 week semester may only pay $2,500. Not much at all especially, when you consider the amount of preparation, grading, and interaction required.

4.) There is a great blog about adjuncting at https://adjunct.chronicle.com/ I have found it to be helpful to learn about the going ons in the adjunct world.

5.) I have always heard that there at some point going to be a shortage of accounting professors. That leads me to believe the need for more adjunct positions to teach. You may be able to land a spot by simply reaching out the department chair at the university you want to teach at. That pretty much is how I landed my gig…sometimes timing is everything…and you need to make yourself available on short notice.

    AUD - Passed
    BEC - Passed
FAR - Passed (Perfect Score of 75 to finish it off)
    REG - Passed

If you get adjunct professorship, those don't pay much, somewhere around $1600 for one semester's work for one course. Not even minimum wage when you take into account the work you do with grading assignments, tests, office hours, etc.

These are part time jobs only.

Some teachers cobble together multiple adjunct professorships from multiple colleges to make a living. Google “freeway adjunct”

I'd rather flip hamburgers, it would pay more.

Now if you get an instructor position, those are HARDER to find. Colleges would rather hire cheap adjuncts than pay $45K for a full time new lecturer. And don't think your adjunct experience is a plus, you get pigeonholed into another adjunct assignment.
