I have been looking at a job in this field. Any of you ninjas have any experience with this? What can one expect?

I did it for four years and it made me dislike the government even more because of the quality of people I worked with. I couldn't be happier to be in the private sector now.

It's a good stepping stone to a career in tax, if that's what you're after. I will caution you, however, that while the hours and benefits are pretty awesome, you're going to be severely limited in terms of career growth, especially if you're in a small state that can only handle one or two “middle managers.” If you're starting at the bottom of the totem pole you'll have room to grow, but at some point you'll plateau. Some folks are completely comfortable with that – others, not so much.

Outside of that, your first audit or two will be nerve-wracking, especially if you're just learning the tax side of things and/or don't have much experience working with CPAs/representatives and debating the finer points of the IRC. Once you get the first couple under your belt, however, it gets a lot smoother. I've grown to love researching and formulating my opinion on areas that are a little grayer – it's actually a lot of fun and there's so much to learn! πŸ™‚
