    Hello All,

I work in a real estate company as a property accountant. I started this CPA journey almost a year ago and wanted to move into public acct. For family reason I need to move to Virginia from New York. I tried couple of accounting firm but no luck. However, I got an offer from another big real estate company in accounting department for around 35% increase from current pay. CPAs work there so experience would not be a problem. I am confused that by accepting this job I will kill my public dream. What you guys think? Should I continue my career in real estate accounting or public is what really the CPA is for? Also, I still need to take 22 credits to meet 150 so I am planning to go for masters after the exam. Thank you

    CPA- VA

I would advise you to not take the job. With a steady and progressive public career, the pay will come later. Public (especially) Big 4 is a coveted commodity on an accounting professional's resume. A lot of companies will not hire unless you have several years of experience. Additionally, you will learn a lot in public that will exponentially benefit your career in the long-term.

The money will come later – do not take the job. Continue your attempts at Public.

Take the job because most people don't even like public accounting and you might not either. Get the work experience at your new job and a year from now rethink it.

For all you know there is not many public accounting openings in Virginia and I am sure most of them are staffed up for busy season by now.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

The worst part of public accounting is dealing with billable hours…Never again…private accounting/40 hour work week is my thing.
