SoLostMemberHey everyone,
I had posted here in the past with my struggles at passing my exams. It took me a ridiculously 10 tries total to passed everything over the course of 1.5 years. It was thanks to everyone’s encouragement here that I finally got through it. With that being over, I thought my problems were gone… but I was wrong. I am now struggling with my jobs. I got laid off twice. Once with a big four (tax) and once with a local firm (audit). I realized that I totally sucked with accounting. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. I double checked, triple checked, quad-triple checked my work, but I still get things wrong. What’s messed up was that I got laid off by my second job one month before I can meet my work experience to apply for the CPA license. I am in a position that I am afraid to apply for another accounting job. I really don’t know what to do at this very moment. I am currently living with my gf and we are both unemployed, so finding a job is critical. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

MinimortyParticipantI am a little bummed about this drama ninja thing. I have never cursed at anyone. I have never said anything offensive really. All I do is generally express a slightly contrarian view and defend it. Do my methods rub some people the wrong way? Probably. Am I overly sarcastic sometimes? probably. But I still don't believe I have crossed any lines or been offensive in my views. I am a bit disappointed that some overly sensitive people can't handle some Internet discussion and debate. I believe I offer the site a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight. This community succeeds because of the collective knowledge and opinions of all of its posters. The highest viewed, most captivating threads are always those where people with differing viewpoints have a lengthy, engaging debate. It's too bad we're going to be missing out on those threads going forward.

jeffKeymasterI've been mostly tongue-in-cheek about it…probably hard to tell since this is the interwebs.
I'm in full FAR recording mode and don't want to police the forum for flameouts. You have pissed at least one poster off before Mini who made a comment at you that I was glad I caught right away…it was the lowest of the low type of retort that I won't even repeat.

MinimortyParticipant@Jeff – Ha. Perhaps I missed that comment. I wonder who said it and what they said. I can't control what other people choose to say. I only control what I say and though I am sure I have taken positions that people don't agree with, I still don't think I have ever crossed the line by saying anything that you couldn't repeat here. It's a shame that someone would choose to leave because an anonymous person disagrees with them or calls them out on some questionable comments. I dunno. I still don't understand what the big deal is. I also agree with you that it's tough to really tell what people are saying by reading a few sentences on an Internet forum.

jeffKeymasterWell, I think you're a great asset to the site…you definitely help me out by flagging disclosure violations and people who pass and stick around and contribute are rare.
You have great advice usually … sometimes its delivered with the tact of a jackhammer, however 🙂

SoLostMemberKasiaS – Thanks, I just needed some cheering up. =)
AlmondCoins – It took me about the same amount of time before I found my second job. I also can't imagine myself doing something else besides accounting. If it wasn't for accounting, I wouldn't of met my gf. hehe. I really want to stay in accounting, but I just don't know if accounting will let me…if you know what i mean…or if that even makes sense?
Jeff – Battle Royale did came out before Hunger Games right?
Roach – That is the route that I am thinking of pursuing. This is the last card in my hand. First was tax, then audit, and now..private. If this doesn't work out, then…..lets just hope it does works out.
Kricket – I am thinking of applying for governmental/state positions as well, but these jobs are really hard to get in, especially without a CPA.
With all these job hopping, I think it will make my resume look rather weak because I will be seen as unstable? I also don't want to stay as an “staff” when I am in my 30's, not that anything is wrong with that, but life have goals right? This is also one of the reason that is keeping me from quitting accounting.
Thanks again for the all the replies everyone.
P.S. Doesn't seem like drama ninja is a fan favorite?

tbstewMember@SoLost – a couple cliches are in order I think. Usually I remind people of the idea of “sunk costs” – in other words, if you're not going to be happy doing something, you should really know when to cut your losses and move on to something else. However in your case, it's good to remember that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. And knowing all the time and effort you put into accounting, I'd encourage you to stick with it. You may feel like you're not progressing, but just the fact that you could pass the exam (no matter how many tries it took) says you have won half the battle already. If it were me, I'd stick it out. As others have said, you have no idea where it might lead you.
As for the Mini conversation going on here – While I'm not a big fan of sarcasm, I can't say I've ever disagreed with a single point Mini has tried to make. Frankly, I think he's the best kind of friend you could have when it comes to taking this exam – even if you don't always like how he wraps the gift.
I'm not too sensitive or too proud to admit that there have been times in my life where I've needed a douse of cold, painful water thrown in my face. Reading the attitudes of many people on this forum, I can tell that many of them need it, too, from time to time – whether they like it or not. CPA exam test-takers make too many excuses for ourselves. I think it's good to have someone ready and waiting to shoot those excuses down before we allow ourselves to be lulled into letting those excuses control how we approach our exam preparation.

AnonymousInactive@SoLost — Ok, so I promise I'm not trying to start drama here, but regardless of whether the “Drama Ninja” finds my post inappropriate, I feel like I should say my piece. First, I'm sorry, but it sounds like at least TO ME, that you're not cut out for accounting…let me clarify…I promise that I'm not implying that you are not intelligent, it just doesn't sound like accounting is your “bag”, so-to-speak. So my advice to you in the LONG RUN would be to find a job unrelated to accounting, however, in the short run, I think you should do whatever possible to support you and your girlfriend. I hope you find something that makes you happy, OP…life can be hard enough without a job that makes you miserable. Good luck!!
Sidenote: I say find one more accounting-related job so you can obtain your CPA license…regardless of the fact that you will probably not work in accounting long term, you still busted your ass for that certification and you should obtain it! Please keep us posted! We're rooting for you!
