This is my first post on Another71. I am hoping to get some guidance from CPAs who have treaded the well-worn path before me. I am in my late 30s, have 13+ years’ experience in senior level accounting/finance roles. I majored in Economics in Undergrad and I am presently enrolled in a part time MBA program with a focus on corporate finance.
The reasoning behind this CPA pursuit include:
1. I would like to set up my own accounting/tax firm that provides services in a specific business niche. Due to my work history, I have considerable experience in a challenging facet accounting/tax related matters and would like to solve this problem for small/medium sized enterprises. I really
2. If my efforts to set up shop fail, the CPA will only enhance my resume/profile if I need to search for another senior level accounting/finance position.
3. I actually enjoy accounting and feel like the CPA will have additional benefits like being able join the audit committee of a non-profit board or serve as a volunteer for my town.Obviously, Option #1 is the main reason why I am willing to go through the grueling process of testing for the CPA. I will need to do the following:
1. Take 4 continuing ed. accounting classes to fulfill the requirements to sit for the CPA exam. I am thinking of doing online classes through LSU.
2. I will need to purchase a prep course, to help me prepare for the CPA exams. I am leaning towards RogerCPA + Ninja notes.
By my estimates, I am looking at a financial commitment of $5-6K, assuming that I pass the exams on the first try. While this cost is certainly cheaper than the MBA, I know that the time committed towards studying is going to be no less. Before I embark on this CPA journey, I wanted to get some thoughts regarding the value of a CPA when setting up your own practice? Also, how did you go about passing the exams, while transitioning to your own practice by building a book of business? Finally, if there are any good books, articles or websites that might be helpful regarding setting up your own practice, please share them.
I look forward to your comments.
