so, I passed all my exams and will be certified by August 2014. my firm switches us to salary once we are certified and I’m not sure what to ask for.

As a staff auditor, I currently make $55k salary in addition to OT (yes I know, OT is great, which is why I need to make sure I’m getting a good flat salary) and will probably reach $63k by the end of the year.

What amount should I ask for now that I am a CPA? Also, apparently they give out 8-10% YE bonuses for salaried employees but I suspect not a lot for staffs. I was thinkin to ask for $70k.

I would say that I am doing a good job and most seniors and managers want me on their project because I have had private industry experience but can’t figure what I am worth.

What would you ask for in my situation?

Seems kind of steep…..if you make 55k now, asking them to bump you up to 70k is 27%….62k would put you around 12% which still seems pretty high…when I pass I will get a 5k increase. Think the standard is around 10% which wouldn't be close to what your asking for….but hey…it can't hurt to ask right?

If, though, you think that with OT you make around $63k, then I would definitely expect to have the salaried pay be around that at least. I'm currently hourly and have thought about what I would want to make if I was salaried…basically my goal would be to predict how many hours I would be working and hope to make the same hourly wage at that point in time. So, if your $55k is for 40 hours and the $8k difference between that and $63k is the OT, then that's just about $26.44/hr if I did my math right. Let's say you expect that as a salaried employee, you'll work an average of 50 hours. That'd be $68,744/yr (though that counts 52 weeks; you might want to count vacation hours at 40 hours or skip them altogether, but you get the point). I don't know if this is considered reasonable, but that would be my personal goal.

If you feel that $63k is what you truly make, then the figure I had above would be close to a 10% raise like Casa mentioned.

It's a tough call to know what to ask for – don't want to low-ball it, but don't want to ask for too much and be seen as greedy either. Good luck!

Ask for what you think, you are worth. If the managers etc are picking you on the projects thats a good sign.

Worst case – they will give you a counter salary, and at that point it will be either you accept it or put in your 2 weeks…

    Thats how capitalism works..
