On an average how much salary does a CPA with 5 year work ex make in chicago/new york area?

I mean, you're going to get a ballpark in response to a vague question such as this. I'd say anywhere from 60-90 in NYC? It may take a few years to move within this range, thereby blowing up whatever accuracy you were shooting for by disclosing the number of years of experience. Organization size is also a significant determining factor.

I would have to say 60 would definitely be on the low side for someone who has 5 years of experience (on a normal career track, that would put them at the end of Sr. Assoc or early Mgr).

60 is very close to published/known Big4 first year salaries – with 5 years experience I know I'd be looking for significantly more than that given 5x the experience.

60k is nothing here in Manhattan. My GF who just graduated from college two years ago with no graduate degree is making 60k here.

I don't even have my CPA yet (almost hopefully!) and have about 5 years work experience (a little less) and make more 90k.

If you have 5 years work experience AND and CPA, you shouldn't be accepting anything under 6 figures in NYC…I'd start with $125,000 / $130,000 and negotiate from there.

You know what? I'm with Jason. I'm down here in Florida and the salary for a CPA with 5 years experience is minimum $60K. And judging by the fact that the salaries in NY are about 40-60% higher than Florida, I'm guessing the other ranges are well off the mark.

I could imagine after 5 years at a big 4 at least and after obtaining your CPA, you'd have to be making at least 90k. A midsize would probably have you in the 80k area.

This whole debate is moot because OP hasn't told us whether he's talking about the largest of firms, or something small-mid sized. Yes, I do live in NYC and I do make six figures, and I've been on the scene a bit longer than some of you who are just starting out. Again, just because you start at 60K does not mean you make 100K in five years. If this were the case then every 30 something year old employed in a firm would be making 125K and beyond. It definitely is what every new hire hopes, but they don't pile it on. Most job hop to get significant increases.

105-125 for big firm manager in NYC is par for course, then again, so is say 85K for director of finance in a midsized in industry (yes in NYC)… obviously bigger title, less pay.

As far as I'm concerned 100K is barely scraping by in NYC, but not everyone is crushing it big firm style.

Sorry, but we will have to agree to disagree.

If you have 5 years experience and a CPA, do not accept anything under 6 figures in NYC (large firm or otherwise). You are selling yourself short and you never want to do that.

100k in NYC, is like 60k elsewhere in the country.

I don't agree with the rent figure in the article below (you can get a roommate and split the rent bill) but everything else is accurate (and if you have a girlfriend tack on another $500- $1,000 in expenses!):
