Salary Expectation Answer?

Last year my boss left our company to work at one of our clients. My company promoted within and I was promoted as well. Now just couple weeks ago we were informed that they would move our Accounting department to the North, aka we will be laid off. So I’ve been searching for jobs and recently got contacted from my former boss about an open position at her company.

I just received the interview email and they asked for salary expectation. I would usually not give out a number until the actual interview but what should I do in this case as this is a referral from my former boss?

    Put negotiable.
Remember salary is only ONE component of compensation. You need to know the entire package, from what % of medical insurance the employer pays, to 401k match, to paid time off (and hours expected to work) to decide what salary you need.

a $10k raise doesn't sound as good if you'll be driving further, working more hours, and paying more for your health insurance.
