Rising Staff II – Switching firms?

Hi community – I’m a rising 2nd yr staff in the southeast in big 4 audit and am feeling the itch for a change. Haven’t felt great about my clients so far and feel like I’m just not learning as much as I had hoped. I’ve tried getting onto a new set of clients since early this summer, but not much has changed. Anyone been in a similar situation? What should I be asking myself?

I don’t think I would want to move into industry very soon. Perhaps after 2-4 yrs in public, but not sure yet. Also, if I wanted to go back and get an MBA or try and move into a finance role, I think it may be easier with a Big 4 on my résumé than if I were a staff accountant at some public company?

I’d like to keep my options somewhat open, but would also think that a change would be nice. Aren’t I too young to be bored in my job?

Has anyone else switched among public firms and what has your experience been?

I can't answer your question since I've been at the same firm since I started Public accounting, but I can tell you that at the small/midsize firm I'm at I work on a diversity of clients and I'm continually learning, and I'm never board. We may have different personalities, which could be the difference. But I truly feel like at a smaller firm you can be exposed to different areas of the audits quicker, have more independence quicker, and move up quicker. We don't have any public clients, but that's ok with me. If you're in Atlanta by any chance, let me know if you'd like to give my firm a look. We're always looking for good candidates, especially Big4 background.

    Good luck.
