Resume — To include or not to include…

    Hi All,

Wanted to ask you all a question through the veil of anonymity provided by the internet since I don’t feel comfortable asking anyone I know in person.

Recently, I was prodded by a friend (not in the accounting field) to take the Mensa Admissions Test. I thought about it for a while and decided to do it. I didn’t tell anyone I was taking it, I just went to the supervised testing session, paid my $40, took the test, and left. Well, as it turns out, I scored a raw score of 100 (99th percentile) and was qualified for membership (where you essentially have to pay $70/year for sparse benefits and some occasional “meeting of the minds”). What drew me in as the biggest benefit to membership was the networking app. As fellow public accountants will know, our livelihood within the firm is eventually determined through our sales contributions. I thought, “hey, not a bad way to network with like-minded business individuals and establish some credibility before even talking about business solutions”. So I forked over the money and am a “Mensa Member”, I suppose. Interesting aside, they take the top 2%, which in the US, would be roughly 6 Million people and the website touts membership of about 57,000 (essentially, 1% of the 2% are actually members…). Makes you wonder if it’s actually worth it. Oh well, trial basis, I say.

My question is, would you ever put something like that on a resume (i.e., Organizations: American Mensa, etc.)? Or do you think you would be negatively labeled as a pretentious d-bag? I currently have a job in public accounting, just food for thought in case I ever decided to pursue other opportunities.

Note: While I may be labeled as “intelligent” through the classical definition of the word, my emotional intelligence, which some might argue is more important, would probably fall 2 or 3 standard deviations below the mean. Sometimes I wonder if I’m a social dullard (to clarify, I do have several close friends…I am, by all definitions, an extrovert, but emotional intelligence as it pertains to business is what I’m referring to). So please, don’t take this post as a self-indulgent pat on my own back, just curious what your thoughts were about putting something like that on your resume and whether you think it would be helpful or disadvantageous to the job seeker.

I would put it on there. Most people know about Mensa, so if nothing else it'll give you something recognizable that the other candidates don't have. Put it under the Awards/Accomplishments/Honors/Organizations/Whatever section of your resume, especially if you need to fill some space.

    REG - 80 (2/28/13)
    AUD - 68 (5/24/13), 84 (7/11/13)
    BEC - 83 (8/29/13)
    FAR - 70 (12/04/13) 80 (2/10/14)

    Cool story!

I would would it on there at the bottom and when they ask you about it – tell the story about how you took the test for kicks and act humble about it – make it a funny anecdote.

Thanks, Jeff! That's a good idea. I read some pretty disparaging things online about online about Mensa members. Someone paralleled it to tall people joining a club for tall people. Haha I don't know…guess it's at least worth checking out. Thanks for the responses, guys 🙂

Some people just get jealous…. I personally don't understand why stating that you have an MBA degree or you are a part of some association recognizing your achievements is considered to be snobbish or something. At the same time stating you are a CPA is ok.

You should be proud of your achievements and don't worry about other people…a lot of them wished they were right there with you. As long as you don't have a snobbish personality, you should be fine 😉

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

Personally never heard of Mensa… but I am a Spanish speaker and mensa in Spanish means dumb/stupid heheh. Ironic I guess lol

Anyways, as others have said, the more accomplishments/certs/memberships you have the merrier. Go ahead and list it on there, can't see the downside to it. It's just one more thing that sets you apart.
