Ok I paid a company to make me a resume, and they did, and it’s fantastic! Except it says I can do all sorts of things in the accounting field that I have never done before. Tax preparation, I did do VITA in 2007 so I figure that’s ok.

But financial statement preparation, other things like that, I have only done in the context of the CPA exam (and school). Is it ok to list those things on a resume if I’ve never done them in a job environment? I’m really confused about this. Don’t want to make it sound like I fell off the turnip truck and have never used a 10-key before, but I don’t want to get to the interview and have them read my resume, and then I have to say, “About that….”

If the resume clearly states I have no accounting experience and am looking for an entry-level job, is it understood that my Skills are pretty much all academic? Help!!

I remember my first interview where I had “knowledge of Quickbooks and Peachtree software” or something like that on my resume. I had never used either before but I heard they were easy to learn and most places used one or the other so I put it on there. The interviewer asked me specifically what my experience was with them and my response was something like “you'll notice I wrote ‘knowledge of' and not ‘experience with'”. (basically saying I just know they exist)

If you're looking for an entry position, they do not expect you to be an “expert” in all of those subjects you listed.

Especially if you don't have any work experience in accounting, how are you supposed to be an expert?

Who pays someone to write his resume?

Are you the one being hired or is ghost-writer being hired? Put his name on your resume, not yours.

That way you won't have the first problem of being hired and the second problem of being fired.

    Lol'd so hard at this.

You paid someone to create a resume that portrays a certain image of yourself.

You log on to A71 to ask if this façade is justified from selling shoes.

The answer is no, but go ahead and try.

Thanks all you helpful people, I think it's going to be pared down to what I feel comfortable with and change Expertise to Knowledge. We can use the newfound blank space to list volunteer jobs or something.

Be careful with things like employee health care benefits on there as well. It's highly unlikely you were exposed to anything but the very tip of that iceberg, especially with the new affordable healthcare act. I'd scratch that entirely.

Oh indeed, that's definitely an item to scratch. I did pension stuff for FAR but health care, other than receiving it, yes that's a total mystery. Cost review and project planning also jump out as definite no's! My last job I dealt with reimbursing and managing volunteer spending accounts, maybe there is a nice way to put that instead. It's not that I'm unqualified or anything, but I think the lady is trying out a standard CPA resume on me and it just needs some serious tailoring.

I'd definately be curious as to what information you provided about yourself that she extracted that from. I'm just blown away because I've got 21 years accounting experience, including an accounting manager and licensed CPA and I can't list half that stuff lol !

And if she's trying out a standard CPA resume on you, you were swindled out of whatever you paid her because you're not a CPA.
