Renegging on a job offer?

What happens if you accept a FT job offer after finishing an internship, and then during the break time, you go and find a better job somewhere else, so when it’s time to come back to the first company where you interned to start full time, you tell them “sorry, I’m actually not coming back to you guys, I found higher pay/better position.

Is there any legal ramification to this after signing a contract? Or will this just mean I cannot use them on my resume going forward? (future companies will call that internship about my experience there, and they will potentially trash me for accepting a job offer and then changing my mind after committing)

Depends did you sign an actual contract as you mentioned (highly unlikely) or did you sign an offer letter? Most employment is at will meaning either party can terminate at any time for any reason. If there's an actual contract involved the answer to your question is contained in what you signed.

It's VERY common to accept an offer then get another better offer. Typically it's no big deal and no consequences.

I did this. Completed internship sophomore year of college and accepted FT offer. Graduation comes around and I decide I want to move to NYC. Didn't have any binding jargon in the contract I signed so it was allowed. However, my future co-workers and HR were not too happy so try to do it as painless as possible. However, the main audit partner liked me so I still used him as a valuable reference for my NYC interviews. If you do this, try to find someone that still likes you and make use of them lol
