I recently just started at mid size firm but after I started, a manager from a big four responded to my email I had sent over half a year ago saying I should send him my resume to put into the database. I know it will look extremely bad if I do the move right now, but should I send him my resume in case I would be able to start later on?

They probably wouldn't hire you until at least next spring unless they are so short on new hires.

The office may be predicting a shortage of experienced staff, and is telling managers to reach out to people who may be interested so they have a pipeline of people ready to interview IF the shortage comes true in the next year.

No harm in sharing a resume and making your interest known (if you are interested) for next year… assuming that's their intent.

If I guessed wrong and they want you now, then you need to decide if you want to go forward and if you think you would accpet the offer soon. If not, then you could decline and suggest interviewing in the summer after a busy season at your current employer.

I would just feel really bad leaving my employer after they decided to hire me. They took me in, and will feed me. I can't abandon them so fast over a big four offer. I guess I can wait after a couple busy seasons.

I had a similar situation.. the interview process took a couple of months and then my offer was for 8 months out. So it is likely that you could work at current employer for a year with the big 4 offer in your back pocket. I would apply and see what happens. I wouldn't pass on a big 4 opportunity.

Send your resume. It already took a year and a half to hear back it's a bit premature to make assumptions about timing of leaving. See where it goes before you think you'll get an offer.

Do you not want to consider working at this big 4 firm? That's fine! If you like your current firm and the opportunities it may bring, then it's very appropriate to politely decline.

If it's inappropriate to leave soon, then what exactly are you asking us for? Do you want advice on how/when to leave for the big 4 firm (if you get an offer) or WHETHER you should consider it? If it's the latter, you should probably share more about your career ambitions and also do a quick search on Linkedin to see where alumni of your current firm end up. Could help guide your thoughts more effectively…

Sounds to me like you are making excuses for why you aren't submitting your resume. Dont then. Sounds like you have a job you are happy with.

If you are intersted in seeing where the lead takes you, update your resume and send it over. Worst case nothing comes of it. Next case you have to make a decision on where you really want to be.

Submit it. See what happens in terms of positions, opportunity, and salary. You can still choose to reject it. Won't hurt to see what's out there.

Also, it's nice you have a loyal mindset. If it's a firm you could care less about, you should still switch at a professionally convenient time (aka not busy season and give more than 2 weeks notice to allow them time to replace/retrain). If it's a firm you love and whose higher management trust you, then that's when the decisions becomes hard — workplace environment is a big part of how you will feel about your job. Even the worst job can be interesting if you have fun, friendly, interesting coworkers and mentors.
