Currently I’ve been employed as a state auditor for the past couple years. Its a comfortable job but that’s the thing, its too comfortable. I’m ready to take on a challenge, work hard, and advanced up the ranks at somewhere that matches my ambitions. So far, I’ve received an offer to go with a real estate private equity firm, I did some research and saw that the firm is ranked very high (top 5). I’m most likely going to accept, but I feel very in the dark regarding what I’m going to be getting myself into.

Does anyone have any experience or insight regarding working as an accountant for a real estate private equity firm and on the industry itself? My knowledge in this area is very lacking. How similar is this to fund accounting (State Street)? Will this open up additional opportunities?

Any information you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

In my experience, as a former Portfolio Accountant at State Street, State Street prepares you for nothing in the outside world.

From my understanding, working as a fund accountant at a fund administrator such as state street is basically data entry and would be considered a dead end job in which you won't learn much. On the other hand, if you work at a public accounting firm and have PE/HF experience, you can get good a good paying job at a PE or HF firm.
