Hi guys, I’ve been given conflicting advise on this. I have two job interviews so nothing definite yet, but if I was to get a great offer I would be putting in my two weeks notice end of July, to early August. As you all know busy season starts soon for the October 15th deadline. We don’t rev up until after Labor Day so this is like a month to a month and a half before we get busy. Some people have told me do what’s best for you, while others have told me don’t burn any bridges and finish out the busy season. I have two private companies that I am interviewing at and I have been wanting to leave public for quite some time. I will have much more time to study for the CPA with the hours and better work life balance. I am stressing about this any advice will help! Thanks!

i think it depends really on the situation. if your current employer has been good to you and the management team there are good people to you and good friends then id lean towards the advice of not leaving them high and dry come busy season. you never know if you'll be leaning on those managers for a referral or job lead down the road. After I left PWC I ended up still being really tight with my manager (I was a senior when I left) and over the past 7 years he's brought me in on employment opportunities on jobs and I have him, as well as referring clients to each other which has helped my book of business. Had I given them all the middle finger and left them high and dry into busy season I can guarantee he and i wouldnt have the relationship we have.

That being said, at the end of the day you work and pursue this career to take care of yourself first and foremost. If the opportunity it too good to pass up I say take it and dont look back. Especially if they haven't “taken care” of you at your current employer.

I personally am debating jumping into industry in the next 9 months or so. Ideally I am going to give my firm one more busy season (through April) before I make a move so they have end of April through the summer to find my replacement. That being said, I am expecting a promotion and raise in the next couple months and if they dont deliver on that I'll be interviewing as soon as possible thereafter and have zero issues with leaving in the beginning of the year if I find an opportunity. In my case I am going to head into industry so I have a little less concern in my case with burning bridges, since I plan to not look back to public after that.

    Good luck to you

Remember you will need someone to sign off on your experience after you pass the exams.
You might have someone at your next job who is licensed and can sign off, but you might not.
Best to try and leave on good terms.
You can tender your resignation but offer to stay on through the Oct deadline if they need you.
