A partner at my firm suggested I become a Quickbook Advisor. I have very little quickbooks experience and was wondering if anyone else has gone through the process. Did you enjoy it? Did you learn a lot from it? How long did it take you?

I’m hopefully done with the CPA exam so I have some extra free time now.

Is what Im studying right now (before starting with FAR again and before my QB course expires), I use QBs at work so I purchased a program on line to learn better. It invest about 30 hours.

    So far, Im glad.

In my opinion I think it will help you with your clients.

I became a ProAdvisor at my firm's managing partner's request and it's been fairly lucrative for the firm in terms of extra fees billed for QuickBooks training for clients. If you plan on using QuickBooks more in the future I would say go ahead and look into it more.

There are actually several different certifications offered through Intuit: desktop-based QuickBooks certifications available each year (with the option to obtain advanced certification after three different years of certification in this area), QuickBooks Online/Cloud, QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions, and QuickBooks Point of Sale (POS). The desktop-based and Online/Cloud certifications are the most pursued, I believe, but what certifications you look into all depend on what you're interested in or what training and/or services you'd like to offer to clients. I myself have certifications in all of the above because I was trying to psych myself up before beginning the CPA exam process and obtaining those certifications was how I did so.

I learned a decent amount preparing for the Enterprise and POS exams because I wasn't that familiar with those programs but I already knew most of the material for the desktop-based and Online/Cloud exams. Altogether, it took me about a week to prepare for and take all of the exams, and you receive your certification certificate and logo for marketing purposes immediately upon passing an exam.

I did enjoy learning more about some of the lesser known features of QuickBooks because my firm does use it almost exclusively and I also like adding useful certifications to my resume. 🙂

Oh, and one more thing- once you pass an exam and become certified you become what is known as a “Gold Level Member” and receive special pricing options that you can offer clients for QuickBooks products. My clients that have needed to purchase new software or upgrade have been very grateful for the discounts.

If there's anything in particular you'd like to know about the certification process, just let me know and I'll be glad to help!

I just cancelled my proadvisor yesterday. Its a great marketing tool if you're trying to build a business or work for an accounting firm like the person above but really its ONLY a marketing tool and you can learn everything in the proadvisor course and more without being committed to a monthly or annual membership.

One more thing, major CPE credits on the courses if you think you'll be licensed soon! If your boss encouraging this see if he will pick up the tab…….cost aside I think you learn a LOT!

    Puppy!!

I'm currently an advisor and to be honest, just going through the course doesn't make you an expert. The major thing about paying $500+ a year is the marketing, free software, and troubleshoot support.

It doesn't hurt to have, but is it worth the money each year? It's up to you.

I thought it was utterly useless. My firm paid for it, so whatever, but when renewal time came around, I looked at them and said I thought it was a big waste of their money and that I'd do it if they wanted, but I thought their $$ could be better spent elsewhere.

The only reason I'll do it is because my firm will pay for it.

I feel like the certification isn't going to be too useful for me but I am really interested in learning about quickbooks or really any type of accounting software just for the the experience.

I work in tax so most of what I do is just taking the client provided TB and plugging it into the tax software. Every now and then, I'll need to make an adjustment on the clients books. The only thing I really know how to do in QB is make a general journal entry.
