Is it weird to send emails to/contact accounting firms for job inquiries even though they’re not saying that they’re hiring? If not then any advice for not making it awkward?

    Thanks in advance!

I do hiring occasionally at our firm. I get resumes through schools, from friends, and from emails of applicants. Most audit firms have a “courting season” in the fall where they hire for the following year (ie Sept 2011 hires would start work in Summer 2012). We rarely hire outside of the months of September – October. We only look at applicants with a couple years of experience outside those months. We just wouldn't have time to train them before the audit season picks up in January.

For all the firms I know, they go through college recruiting and state society for CPA's. When I receive resumes after September, I would only keep it on file for the following year since we are full staffed at this point. We also never post openings online since we have over 200 resumes to review already. My advice is to contact your college's career office to find out who is hiring or accepting applications – they will know. And if you moved to a different state than your college, see if the college has connections to other universities where you live or contact the state society for CPA's. The state societies usually have mingling at different events to so I would join it.

But many tax firms are looking for interns for Jan-April still. If you are interested in tax, I would contact firms to see if they are hiring or have paid internships.

No it's not weird. Just introduce yourself, say what you're looking for, and attach resume. I've gotten interviews this way.

@Kitty200: Thanks for the advice. I did look at the job posting at my school's career center but there are not many firms so I want to expand my search by looking up online. I've found some more firms around my area but only a few of them stated clearly that they're hiring so I wonder if there's another way for me to reach out.

@misanthrope87: Thank you, I'm planning to do the same thing. Hope I'll get a job soon to fulfill the experience requirement for the CPA license.
