Quick interview/e-mail question…

I sent an e-mail to a local CPA firm back in July regarding their job posting on their website.. The owner (or the partner) replied saying “Thank you for your interest in the position. We usually interview candidates like you in the month of October – December with a start of January 15. Please send in your resume, I will put your contact information in our pipeline for the upcoming interview season.”

I haven’t heard anything back since then. Should I e-mail back, just to make sure they haven’t forgotten about me?

What/How should I say it? I don’t want to sound desperate, yet I want to make sure they remember me and I’m on their radar.

    Thanks!:)

I'd send a fresh copy of your resume in an email that says it is your understanding that this is the time of the year that they are looking for additional help and that you are interested in talking to them. I wouldn't even bring up that you've sent in your resume before-they've seen hundreds since then and probably multiple times.

In this job market, I would certainly be proactive. There is nothing wrong with putting together an email, or placing a call to this firm. Whichever way you choose (BTW, I think I would call, it shows that you are serious and taking the time to speak with someone-IMO) I would say something to the effect of ” I had communication with ____________ in July regarding a position with your firm and I am following up on setting up an interview” I don't think you have to get fancy with your communication, keep it simple and to the point. I think I would attach a resume and let them know you have already submitted one, but for their convenience, you are attaching one again. If you are calling them I would ask them if they would like another copy of your resume.

Good luck…I am in the process of looking myself. UGH no fun!

Of course they forgot about you! You must be insane to wait 5 months and not follow-up with them. Not only is it careless, it tells the firm you don't really care. A lot changes in that much time, and a firm knows that. They will not seek out candidates resumes they have from their pile in HR. Yankeeaccountant has the ideal message “I spoke in July with ( ) and am still interested…”. You never want to wait until their recruiting is halfway done before you even begin talking to them again. It's one thing if they decline you for further interviewing, but if they don't starting promptly at the beginning of Oct. (or even end of Sep.) you should have gotten in touch again. I apologize for the rant, I despise lethargy (even when unintentional).

Regardless, you can't change the past. So follow up now. Today. Pray they have not filled positions yet. If you're hoping to start work in the next few months and haven't contacted any recruiters, you will be in for a loong recruiting season. Good luck, and get out there!
