Qualifying experience

I left a job as a Payroll Supervisor with a large non-profit; this last January. After nine years and being looked over by the internal audit manager, despite a majority of the team vocally wanting me, I felt I just couldn’t wait any longer for a better opportunity to come. I felt I had to make a move or I would be stuck in another year upon another year of payroll.

I applied and was hired by a local Construction company. The housing collapse appeared to have hit them and I found record of them filing bankruptcy, a few years ago; to protect assets from going to sale. With some reservation and a pay cut (as compared to the tenure of my former company) I accepted employment.

I learned that this place had hired someone a month before me that only lasted a week before leaving. I realized that this company had gone through probably about a half dozen cheap bookkeepers that new just enough to enter items into Quickbooks (read mess). I occasionally saw employees that had their paychecks bounce. It’s obvious that the owner is commingling funds. He is using stall methods to delay or not pay subcontractors. Owes over 100k in 941’s, and 100k’s to vendors.

We finally get funding to build a project and hire on a CPA with years of construction experience to oversee this. He feels shafted by the owner as he advised that he did not want to process taxes for the many entities we have and other issues. He is in fact leaving (He confided in me). I recently had an interview with a Padgett Business Services. A Accounting-Bookkeeping-Tax Preparer service. I have been given an offer with an even lower wage. $3k lower and I am already avoiding health insurance to pay off life’s sudden debt in the last year. I will not be able to avoid that come January. I am reluctantly excited about the position as the owner seems like someone I would like to work with and I initially felt that the work would qualify for the State of Washington’s work experience requirement.

Trying to find the appropriate work experience has been an issue for years. I spoke with my co-worker(CPA) and he feels that little accounting shops like this really wont benefit me, experience wise. Speaking to him and others; the words “fear” and “desperation” came up. It caught my attention. I wonder that my fear of being stuck in payroll influenced me to take on this current position. I wonder if I am now about to make the same mistake? The CPA recommended waiting for other opportunities.

If the wage wasn’t so low as to really make me afraid that I can’t afford the change, I probably would say yes. A bonus of up to ten percent after my first year is to be considered. This would bring me to about my current salary. I have thought about making my self payroll exempt to bring home the same money and apply the bonus to what will be my 2014 taxes. I think this is gambling though and putting my family at risk.

I think what would help me make this decision is confidence in know that the job duties of a staff accountant for such a business would qualify. If anyone can speak to this, I would be very appreciative of your input.

    Thank you in advance.

Finding a cpa to sign off might be the hardest part…why wouldn't the current co-worker do it for you?
