Was wondering if anyone has any success stories of people who have gotten out of public accounting-tax and transitioned to any type of role on the private side of things without having to take a salary cut or start entry-level.

I’ve been in tax for 3.5 years now (senior associate) and thinking its about my time to get out, but the only stories i know, people had to take a pay cut or start entry level as an analyst or something.

Also, i wouldn’t mind doing tax at a company in their tax department. I like the area, I’m just sick of the hours!

    thanks!

I left Big 4 tax after about 3.5 years to become an assistant controller with double the pay.

It is all about networking and going above and beyond in client service. Clients notice that and whenever they are aware of an opening, they will ask if you want to be referred. Not only are referrals your best bet, but it also gets you on the top of the list for potential candidates interviewing for that position. All I had to do was show up to the interview and I pretty much got the job.

Even if you have to take a pay cut, initially, it may be worth it in the long run.

You can work your way back up AND be happier doing it = PRICELESS

Of course, the pay is important, but definitely weigh it among ALL the factors – work hours, long term opportunities, etc.

Focusing on a tax department of a private company sounds like a good direction.
