For those of us that work in public accounting: is there an expectation for the number of BILLABLE hours you are expected to put in each week? I have not been told of any at my firm – yet I know that if I can’t get any in, I’ll be out of a job.

We have a goal each year (mine for example is 2000 chargeable/billable hours). The goal is set on a national basis and is supposed to account for personal time and training already.

The only time someone might get let go over chargeable hours is if they spend a lot of time sitting in the office unassigned. If you're unassigned (= not chargeable time) occasionally, it doesn't really matter. But if you're constantly unassigned if basically shows no team really wants to pick you up, and then it may be worth worrying.

At my job it's assumed you're putting in 40 chargeable hours a week, unless you had personal time or training.

I work for small CPA firm so my weekly goal is 34 hours billable. With tax season overtime, most staff exceed their goals which means a nice bonus at the end of the year. Our annual pay & bonus is based off 33.33% of our net billable dollars for the year.
