Promotions & Raises

    Hello everyone,

I am curious about everyone’s personal experiences regarding raises and promotions. I know that many people are of the mentality that we should be thankfully just to have employment, but I also believe that employers still do value great employees.

With that said, if you don’t mind sharing, what % raises have you received when promoted to managerial levels? In particular, going from an Associate / Sr. Associate level to manager, and once you make manager, what are the typical % raises that you see then? Has anyone had experience with negotiating their raise with their promotions, or just in general?

    Thanks in advance for sharing.

Its been my experience that a promotion from within isn't going to get you much more than a 10% pay increase (there are exceptions and I am sure someone here will have an example). Its also been my experience that in this economy even the “best” employees are only getting a 3% or so merit increase. Companies that already know darned well what you make and what you are willing to settle for very rarely will stray far from that level.

That said I just left my job. Got a new one at 33% more than I was making PLUS a bonus between 10% and 30% of my new annual salary. I negotiated an extra weeks vacation and waived the waiting period for 401(k) and health insurance enrollment.
