    Hi Everyone:

I’m in the Houston job market and have been in Oil & Gas for roughly four years. I have my CPA, MBA, undergrad in Accounting.

Has anyone looked into becoming a procurement analyst or heard of someone that took a similar role whose background is Accounting/Finance?

There’s an opportunity at my current employer but not sure if it’s a wise move or not. I do like what the job entails (heavy analytics) and it gets one away from typical financial analyst duties but my background would still come in handy. It’s a change of pace so to speak.

There’s also a Sourcing Specialist type of role and while is a different role, it’s within the same “family” of profession that the procurement role can be found as well.

There’s also, for whatever reason, a handful of Sr. Cost Accounting type roles in different operations. I’ve never had this role but I’m currently an analyst so not sure if that too is a rather wise move. Mainly because it may be seen as “going backwards” from a analyst to accountant role. My other fear is that I will become bored with the role rather quickly as I’ve done accounting for 10 years. However, one does learn and acquire an abundance of knowledge about operations given the nature of the role.

Thank you for your time and feedback.

What are your long term career goals? It's hard to say what you should do without considering the big picture. What is it about your current role, department, etc, that makes you interested in these other positions? Are you just bored, do not not like the work, do you just like to try new things, do you want a raise? I also think that it may be hard to tell exactly what positions at your company are comparable. I think at my company being a Sr cost accountant would be above being a procurement analyst, so not a step backwards, but it could be different in your company. Also, when you say you've been in accounting for 10 years, but it sounds like not in cost accounting? Did you enjoy cost accounting in school, was it a strong area on the CPA exams? Personally, it was my least favorite are of learning and thus a cost accounting position would not be as appealing to me, but others love it. To know what you should do I think really depends so much on your personal situation and preferences. It's great to have so many options though.
