Hello everyone! Accounting open house is coming up here in my area. I have graduated last year and finished my CPA exams and ethics exam in July 2013. I have no accounting experience. Honestly, even though all is left is getting experienced to become licensed, I feel as if people or recruiters will think I’m not good enough to work in the accounting world. At the same time, it makes me nervous and scared because the experienced knows more than me and will expect me to be at their level.

My question is, will a person like me have a chance of getting hired by an accounting firm or the government?

As the main recruiter for our CPA firm, entry level people hired by us aren't expected to have any experience. Zero. School only gives you the basis and foundation from which to build upon. Through a mentoring program, we teach you everything and for the most part (except for a 2 day in-house training program) all of it is done “on the job”.

Entry people who have decent GPA's and who have passed the exam or who have passed parts of the exam are a desired candidate at firms.

As long as you present yourself well and interview well, you will get a job offer.

Thank you for the insight Tripp11. I have done a mock interview with a random recruiter and I got very nervous and tried to answer the recruiter's question as professional as possible. When I was looking at him while speaking, I had to look away at times so I wouldn't make the response awkward at times.

IMO, just try to be yourself during the interview. A seasoned interviewer can see right through all the bravado anyways. For me, I prefer a candidate to be a little nervous during the interview – it's a natural reaction to a big job interview. I don't think it conveys insecurity or a lack of confidence at all.

I would try to have as many people interview you as possible, and it's key that you're not friends with them. Not sure if you belong to a church or some other organization, but there are countless people who live near you that would help you if you just asked.

If I can be of more help, please ask.
