Has anyone ever had a hard time getting an accounting job even after finishing the CPA exams..? If so, I’m probably considering it and looking into something else besides accounting. One includes army or national guard. I see that Fall is when most of the hiring is done, and I don’t think I’m going to wait another year until they hire candidates. After finishing the CPA, I was happy that it was over and excited to start an accounting job for the first time if I got hired. Turns out the opposite. I was getting declined interviews left and right.

Sorry everyone, just venting and thinking hard on what to do now. =)

Just trying to help out… asking questions to see if I can offer directions where you can go. But if you don't answer the questions and just reply with, “I have tried, and not everyone gets an offer.” Then it is hard to have someone help you out. From my experience I have learned the more people involved the better. Different people have different perspectives on life and how to achieve things. How bad do you want it? You going to just roll over? And this so called “career counselor” is the only person that can help you out? I will link my personal story to becoming a CPA. It all comes down to how bad do you want it. And from your replies it sounds like you don't want it that bad.

If you graduated last year. Go to the networking things still. You are fresh out, no one will think a thing of it. Go work at H&R block or some tax place during the tax season. Start advertising bookkeeping services… ANYTHING to get accounting experience. Once you have some experience and then when the hiring season comes back start applying again. Go drive to accounting firms and ask to speak with partners, and hound them and if they don't have any openings ask if they know someone that might be hiring at another firm. Get down in the trenches and get to work on finding a job. It wont be handed to you. Unless you have something on your resume that says you have experience doing it… you will get passed over. You need face time and you need to start getting in front of the people that can make it happen. If you show you have a desire to get it and you are persistent in looking and networking you will find something. Just sending out a resume without any experience you have to expect that result. You need to be attending the meet the firms nights still at your school.

For what it's worth, I heard if you go into the army with a 4-year college degree, you automatically enter at a certain rank (higher rank than you could without a degree). Like, officer or something.

What about FBI special agent? My husband used to go a little bonkers during his public accounting busy seasons and start seriously considering applying. https://fbijobs.gov/111.asp

I feel the accounting hiring season has just begun…I got interviews and offer from my previous employer in October. I think you should keep trying till at least the end of the busy hiring months which is from Oct. to Jan. If there is one thing i learned in life, it is never sell yourself short. You will always regret it if you do.
