Path to Take

I don’t know if I am looking for an exact answer or not. Maybe I am just trying to get a feel for what the different options are like. I realize that just because you start somewhere doesn’t mean you can’t switch later. I am majoring in accounting and business management. There have been times where I have felt that I definitely want to get into accounting, and times that I have questioned it. I switched majors a few times in college. Initially I was an exercise science major and wanted to become a strength and conditioning coach in the NHL. I wanted to in order to be able to keep the training aspect as a part of my life once I was done playing and because I enjoyed training and the feeling of becoming a better hockey player. After sitting down with the same sports psychologist as zach parise on the mn wild, I started to realize that the off-ice training did not have the ROI that I thought, and that the mental part of the game had a much larger impact once skill was already developed. Because of that, I decided to switch majors. I switched to business marketing. When I took marketing, it wasn’t what I thought. I was expecting more along the lines of communication/sales and it was actually about the pricing strategy, ect. I then switched to business organizational leadership. My grades suffered a bit from not having a real passion for anything in school. After a while, I began to think, what is the point of this major? It is mostly common sense. (Marketing, Management, Business Ethics) and I came across my first accounting course since it was a requirement for my business major. It wasn’t a lot of math like I had thought, and I actually enjoyed the concept, the idea of the accounts switching back and forth, ect. I decided to become an accounting major. When I took my 2nd accounting course, managerial accounting which is the precursor to cost accounting, I actually enjoyed it and still do. It seemed like that aspect of accounting would allow someone to be more of a difference maker and thinker than traditional accounting. There are times when I think that I want to have a career in accounting because I find it more interesting than any other part of business, but there are other times that I wonder if that is a good enough reason to go into the field. I consider myself to have an entrepreneurial mindset and to be someone that thinks analytically and not always traditionally. I’m always reading some kind of Harvard Business Review book or a book of the like. In fact, sometimes my grades will suffer because I spend more time reading Harvard Business Review than my school books because I believe outside of a grade in the class, those books have a greater ROI. I am open to the idea of leaning more towards the business analyst type of positions once I graduate. I have seen entry level business analyst positions posted on indeed. However, I humbly realize that just because I might have the mind for it, doesn’t mean that other business experience wouldn’t be very helpful, and that includes accounting experience. I am getting experience as an accounting assistant right now. Sometimes I like it a lot, sometimes its, meh. It depends on the task I am completing. While I say this, I also am not expecting every job to be one I absolutely love. If I start in a cash reconciliation position, there is nothing stopping me from doing some kind of business analysis later in my career. I’m sure a position as a business analyst would involve financial, HR, marketing, ect. While I see accounting as something I would rather do in school than any other major, I am unsure if it is something that I would rather do out of school than anything else. I am not saying it can’t be, but that I am just unsure. Let’s say I graduate, and an accounting position opens up, great, I can do that and always switch later. Or, if a business analyst position opens up, I wouldn’t mind considering it as a possibility. However, I really would like to know what I am getting into. I really don’t know whats involved with a business analyst position. I really don’t know what’s involved with some of the entry level accounting positions either. And in addition, it would be nice to not spend time in a part of a career that I eventually decide I do not want to do. Any advice?

There's a variety of careers in which accounting is a good start. For me it sounds like you'd benefit from some time in a mid-tier public accounting firm, go top 25 MBA, and then go either Management Consulting or a higher level Corp Finance role.

I'd say spend some time looking into the variety and diversity of different accounting roles. No offense, but to me you sound like your understanding is definitely lacking in that area.

I'll admit, I do not know a whole lot regarding entry level accounting positions in private. Realistically, I do not know if I would be a good fit in public, nor do I think I have the grades.

How about getting a double major in Accounting and MIS. You will open yourself up to options in accounting, project management, and business analyst positions.

I had thought about that at one point, but it is too late to switch to MIS with all the prerequisites.

@hutchinson29, I think it is great that you are putting this much thought into what you want to do early on. While reading your post, one of the things that struck me the most is that you went from wanting to do something like being a strength & conditioning coach, to doing something that will likely require you to sit behind a desk for 40+ hours per week. Personally, this is something that I had never thought about when I was in college, and maybe it won't bother you at all, but sometimes I feel like I am literally rotting away in my desk chair. I am very active like you (I am a runner) and sometimes I think that I would give anything for a job that allows me to be up and moving around. If it is not something that will bother you, than I think that accounting can be a very good base for an analyst type of position. A finance background could work out well for you too, and sometimes it is only a few extra classes that would allow you to double major in accounting and finance.

Have you thought about getting an intern position at some local firms? Getting your feet wet and utilizing the knowledge of those already in the organization would be invaluable in helping you determine your path.

“I do not know if I would be a good fit in public, nor do I think I have the grades.”

Get them up or you'll be somewhat limited in what you want to do. Are you moderately good looking? Social? If yes to either one then I'd suggest your best bet is to get your grades up, start networking, and get involved in on campus recruiting/accounting organizations.

If not, then all the Harvard Business reviews in the world aren't going to matter. If you do network then you'll get an opportunity to talk with individuals in the filed and get the inside scoop on interesting career fields.

Otherwise, you're just winging it and opening yourself up to a hard time finding a good entry level job or just staying in the same company where you're at.

Long story short (for all you student lurkers): The better your job/company coming out of college, the better your options and opportunities in the future. So just do your best to maximize what you have and interesting jobs will open up if you're motivated, professional, good networker, and a hard worker.

Well I don't have time to change my grades for my public accounting recruiting period, but I do have time to get them up for other recruiting periods. I could be wrong, but I am under the impression that there is more prescreening assumed in the accounting profession than in other professions. Meaning that if you start in private, it is assumed you couldn't get into public. With that being said, I wouldn't mind considering the business analyst type roles down the line if my chances of advancing in the accounting field will be notably hindered by not starting in public. I would have no problem starting in some kind of cash rec position and then working as a staff accountant after that if advancing beyond that point is not unreasonable/unrealistic. However with the prescreening, and the fact that I would probably be competing with people with public experience, I really do not know what the chances would be for advancing beyond staff accountant without public experience. If the chances aren't realistic, it may be better to pursue business analyst type positions at some point rather than being confined to accounting.

@hutchinson29: Private right away doesn't necessarily mean you won't get back into public… I interned with Big 4, didn't get an offer (God only knows why, I really don't), and had to go private when I didn't get ANY full-time public offers. A year after graduation and I just found my way into a mid-tier firm. There's always a way!
